Primarily, the narrative continues to revolve around eliminating the Templars, a recurring motif in this series. Moreover, a significant portion of gameplay involves rebuilding the Brotherhood and gathering allies to protect Japan. However, what truly remains consistent across all Assassin’s Creed stories, including “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, is the central theme that will resonate most with players: the concept of a chosen family.

Over the years, the idea of a “found family” has become a widely appealing storyline, with numerous titles adopting this theme. Interestingly, even Assassin’s Creed series isn’t exempt from this trend, as Assassin’s Creed Shadows seems to revolve around it. The characters in the narrative often invest significant effort into finding their roles, forging unshakable relationships, and safeguarding those close to them. Despite its familiarity, this setup results in a captivating journey that keeps audiences engaged.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Built Around Found Family

Naoe’s Beginning is All About Finding a New Family

Right from the start of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, the idea of a chosen family is clearly portrayed. When Oda Nobunaga annihilates the Iga clan, kills Nagato, and seemingly kills Naoe, she is rescued by an enigmatic figure named Sorin and a young boy called Junjiro. Initially wary of them due to her past traumas, as Naoe recovers from her wounds, she learns to trust these individuals and develops feelings for them. They not only form significant bonds but also contribute significantly to the reconstruction of the Brotherhood that had been decimated.

During her journey, Naoe encounters additional individuals whom she comes to rely on and promises to shield. Among these, none hold a deeper bond than Junjiro, the child, whose wellbeing she cares for as if he were kin. She seems willing to go to great lengths for him, despite having played a part in his father’s demise. In return, Junjiro appears equally devoted to her. This dynamic and their shared experiences shape much of Naoe’s odyssey across Japan, creating an engaging and emotional narrative.

Naoe and Yasuke Must Also Learn to Work Together

In her travels, Naoe forms deep connections and promises to safeguard various Non-Player Characters (NPCs), while she and the dual protagonist, Yasuke, embody the concept of a found family. Initially, they were adversaries due to Yasuke’s loyalty to Oda Nobunaga, who was responsible for one of the last Japanese assassins’ death, and Naoe’s quest for vengeance against Nobunaga for her father’s demise. However, as their journey unfolds, what initially appeared to be a contentious relationship transforms into a strong bond.

With a bit of guidance from Junjiro, Naoe decides against slaying Yasuke and instead, Yasuke pledges his aid for her mission. Together, they embark on a journey to eliminate the Shinbakufu, growing increasingly united in their efforts. They are always there for each other, ready to lend a hand whenever necessary, and work harmoniously towards restoring what was once destroyed. Although Naoe might not form as strong a bond with Yasuke as she does with her rescuers, the narrative is deeply influenced by the concept of found family.

The narratives of Naoe and Yasuke appear centered around the theme of discovered kinship, as they devote much of their time to aiding those they consider allies. Since the story is presented from both viewpoints, it results in an engaging yarn, a type that the Assassin’s Creed series hasn’t delved into extensively so far.
