The supernatural comedy series “Undead Unluck” has concluded at Chapter 239 in Weekly Shonen Jump. After five years of publication in the magazine, it’s set to return for Season 2 of its anime adaptation soon, with a special episode already planned for Winter 2025. Despite being surrounded by powerhouses like “My Hero Academia”, “Jujutsu Kaisen”, “Chainsaw Man”, and the venerable “One Piece”, “Undead Unluck” has managed to make its mark in this highly competitive industry.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but anticipate the inevitable debate about the quality of our beloved series now that it has come to an end. Even the global sensations we admired earlier, which garnered enormous acclaim during their run, saw their conclusions dividing fans worldwide. This isn’t uncharted territory for Shōnen Jump or the Shonen Genre; iconic series like Attack on Titan, Bleach, and many others before have instilled a belief that the final acts of Shonen Series often fall short of their immense potential. So, here I stand, wondering: how does Undead Unluck fare in this regard? Did it pull off a satisfying conclusion?
Warning: Some Spoilers for Undead Unluck Manga Ahead
Was Undead Unluck’s Ending Rushed?
Fans Felt Like the Series Could Have Gone on For Much Longer
It’s challenging to decisively identify if a series is “hastily written.” While the amount of content an author initially outlines might suggest their intentions, it could also be the author setting up intriguing elements without intending to develop them further. In the end, any engaging story usually leaves fans eager for more, but a hurried conclusion often leaves fans wondering if the narrative was fully developed, as indicated by the question: “Did it deliver enough?
It’s understandable why some fans might think that the manga “Undead Unluck” seemed rushed. For quite some time, there were rumors circulating that the publication of the manga could be canceled, and it appears that these speculations may have prompted a faster pace in its development. Despite the numerous impressive and imaginative elements already displayed in the series, fans felt that there was still much more potential content to explore. For instance:
1. Deepening the relationship between the main characters, especially their motivations and personal growth.
2. Expanding on the backstory of the world and its undead inhabitants.
3. Introducing new undead species or abilities that could further enrich the story.
4. Exploring the consequences of the undead outbreak on society and individuals beyond just the main characters.
5. Delving into more complex plot twists and mysteries to engage readers even further.
- More explanations and time with the master rules
- Extending the fights to increase stakes and spectacle
- Make problems harder to solve
The Master Rules Could Have Used More Time
One captivating feature of the Undead Unluck series lies in its Master Rules. Although the battles shown were thrilling, they could have been more impactful had they received additional narrative time, enhancing their perceived danger and elevating the tension for the climactic showdowns. It’s one thing to assert that villains possess immense power; it’s another to vividly portray that strength on the pages. Moreover, several Master Rules abilities were not explicitly illustrated in the story. If there are discussions about the series being hurried, this is a place where extra time could be convincingly added.
In addition to making the villains more fully realized, it would also make encounters with them more challenging in Undead Unluck. The story has many intense moments, but sometimes the battles seem to conclude too quickly. While longer fights may not always lead to better ones, and they can be demanding for authors to create, extended conflicts might have greatly improved the experience in Undead Unluck.
The Main Cast Needed to Toil Some More
In our non-combative struggles, it seemed like we could’ve delved deeper into resolving the emotional turmoils. As the tale reaches its conclusion, the Union triumphs over the divine entities of God and Soul not through brute force, but by tapping into something profound – Fuuko’s heart. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, we leverage The Heart to secure victory, yet at an unimaginable cost: Fuuko forgets Andy and all her cherished companions.
In a different phrasing, this part of the narrative could have provided an engaging denouement to the story. Andy vows to rekindle Fuuko’s affection towards him, implying that they would continue to care for her. However, the tale missed an opportunity to make their reconciliation process a deeply emotional journey. This emotional exploration could be achieved through flashbacks depicting significant moments from the story, or by reinterpreting past events in light of the characters’ growth and transformation. Moreover, the narrative could have looped back to the beginning, allowing Fuuko to reflect on her memories and experiences. These elements could have sparked additional intriguing plotlines and arcs, but the manga concluded prematurely without fully developing these potential narratives.
If An Ending is Rushed, Can it Still Be Good?
Despite Rushed Feelings, Undead Unluck Manages to Have A Great Ending
Although some might argue that Undead Unluck was hastily concluded, could it still be a satisfying finale? Just because an ending may seem incomplete or leave readers craving for more doesn’t automatically make it a disappointing one. Every narrative conceals more than can be shown and more that can be fully developed, but ultimately, any ending should tie up the main plotlines and provide a sense of closure. In the case of Undead Unluck, this resolution could prove to be fulfilling.
Reflecting on the journey from Chapter 1 up until now, it’s evident that the characters have evolved significantly, overcoming obstacles and realizing their aspirations. Our principal characters, Andy and Fuuko, culminate this tale in an extraordinarily satisfying manner.
From the start, fans have been alongside Fuuko, and she concludes her journey in a blissful romantic tale. Although it may not mirror Kimi ni Todoke, she now has the chance to express gratitude for her life. As for Andy, who grappled with being Undead since the debut, his affliction has been alleviated. Initially, he might have chosen to conclude matters swiftly, but instead, he finds joy in assisting others and being with Fuuko, until they can achieve the “epic demise”.
Currently, you can catch the Undead Unluck series on Hulu if it’s available in your region. Alternatively, you can delve into the world of Undead Unluck through its Manga, accessible via the Shonen Jump app from VIZ Media.
