Donquixote Doflamingo, so far, stands out as one of the most fully developed villains in One Piece. Like many main antagonists, he yearns for power, but his past as a dethroned World Noble and his relentless thirst for revenge against the Marines give him an edge of mystery and depth that set him apart.
He, too, stands out due to an authentic sense of fondness and admiration for certain members of his team, which isn’t commonly seen among the major antagonists in this series. Despite being imprisoned within Impel Down at present, he maintains a strong belief that his time hasn’t run its course yet, and he’s eager to see how the world develops beyond those walls. Here are some of Donquixote Doflamingo’s most memorable quotes that truly reflect his unique character.
1. “Every Human Being… Even The Most Pious Saint, Harbors A Latent Streak Of Barbarity That Surfaces When He Sees Blood!”
That’s Entertainment
.jpg)
- Context: Doflamingo talks about the Colosseum and how running from it unscathed is not particularly popular with his audience.
- Full Quote: “Who’s going to be happy seeing you safe and sound after running around like a coward? If you can’t cut down your foe, take a blow and bleed for yourself! Every human being… even the most pious saint, harbors a latent streak of barbarity that surfaces when he sees blood! Blood and death! This is entertainment!”
Doflamingo’s intention for brutal chaos in Corrida Colosseum mirrors his overall mindset. Even though he’s correct about the venue’s popularity, it also highlights his perspective that humanity’s darkest side represents its true nature.
Observing Doflamingo, I cannot help but notice his profound belief that all beings share the same malevolent and self-serving nature as himself. He seemingly prides his own brutal character not as a flaw, but as a virtue. His frequent use of absolutes, particularly when discussing the supposed wickedness of others, seems to reveal more about his own personality than it does about any sweeping condemnation of humanity.
2. “The Weak Should Run While They Still Can Or Be Swept Away By The Tides Of Time, As They Roll Back To Reveal A New Era Of Champions!”
Survival Of The Fittest

- Context: Doflamingo turns away Bellamy, who he sees as a continual failure, despite his efforts to join Doflamingo’s family.
- Full Quote: “The beginning is upon us. I suggest you prepare. We’re drawing close to a new world in which only true pirates can survive. The weak should run while they still can or be swept away by the tides of time, as they roll back to reveal a new era of champions!”
Doflamingo’s dramatic outburst stems from his intense disdain for those who don’t seize power through force. Specifically, he despises Bellamy because of his weakness and repeated defeats. However, this animosity might run deeper than it seems. Bellamy and his crew were initially privileged, resorting to piracy out of leisure. In a sense, Bellamy mirrors the World Nobles, powerful figures who are weak despite their affluent backgrounds.
Observing closely, I see Doflamingo, having experienced powerlessness as a child and striving relentlessly to reclaim it, harbors contempt towards the seemingly weak. In his perspective, these individuals fail to meet his standards for earning whatever authority or advantage they possess. Consequently, he envisions a world where those who strive and work diligently for power occupy the higher echelons, with him potentially presiding over this hierarchical system.
3. “Power Doesn’t Last Long, It’ll Rot Faster Than Anyone Thinks!”
A Thinly Veiled Threat

- Context: Doflamingo, after being bound in solitary confinement, questions the reason for such an intensive effort on his behalf.
- Full Quote: “I’d better watch my loose tongue. What a rotten mess I could cause. Just think, what if I told the whole world the secret Mary Geoise is hiding? Why does it matter if it’s revealed now? Power doesn’t last long, it’ll rot faster than anyone thinks!”
Doflamingo appears to have a deep-seated fixation on the authority he once held as a World Noble. This obsession might explain why the World Government seems unusually respectful towards him, more so than other warlords. Despite being restrained and confined alone, his occasional laughter suggests he takes pleasure in imagining other World Nobles losing their positions, much like he did.
After being dethroned from Dressrosa, this character has grown more cynical about power. He was removed quickly due to Luffy and his allies’ actions. Since then, he’s harbored a secret known only to the World Nobles, which seems ready to be revealed. This encounter, combined with his current status as a condemned prisoner, makes him willing to expose this secret if given the opportunity. The quote suggests that he feels he has nothing left to lose.
4. “I Won’t Forgive Anyone That Laughs At My Family. Understood?”
Doffy’s Thoughts On Family

- Context: Doflamingo reacts to Pica being mocked for his voice after a soldier giggles at how surprisingly high-pitched it is.
- Full Quote: “I lost my mother when I was 8…and killed my father when I was 10. Those with the title of “Executive” or above are my “family” with whom I’ve shared my joys and sorrows. They’re the only thing I have! I won’t forgive anyone that laughs at my family. Understood?”
The strained relationship between Doflamingo and his family is a prominent theme in the series. His father, Homing, found Doflamingo too engrossed in the extravagant lifestyle of the World Nobles, and perceived him as growing into a spoiled young man. In an attempt to mold him into a more compassionate individual, Homing decided to leave their organization. However, the circumstances they were left in ultimately caused irreparable damage to their family bond. Doflamingo’s younger brother, Rosinante, was the only immediate relative who made it to adulthood, and he felt no qualms about using the pretext of kinship to hand Doflamingo over to the marines when the opportunity arose.
Subsequently, Doflamingo’s group transformed into a compact band of followers, fueling his ambition for power following his discovery of the Conqueror’s Haki. Trebol, who would later rise to become one of Doflmingo’s top lieutenants, provided him with his Devil Fruit and the weapon he used to slay his father. This act marked the inception of the Donquixote Pirates, a crew renowned for favoring its most powerful members, bestowing upon them the prestigious title of “executive.
Doflamingo’s affection for his family is clouded by his craving for dominance. Family holds significance for him not just due to their power but also because he can manage them. However, as a gesture of goodwill towards his “family”, he grants them authority and prestige. In the story, Doflamingo becomes infuriated by a man who ridiculed Pica’s high-pitched voice, an early associate of his. Since Pica is a formidable fighter and ready to assist Doflamingo, he regards him with greater fondness than his father, whom he perceives as weaker because he willingly gave up power for love.
In essence, it can be said that he truly appreciates his underlings, and their bond seems mutually beneficial. Upon Vergo’s demise at Punk Hazard, Doflamingo genuinely expressed gratitude for Vergo’s long service, and Vergo departed with a smile. These instances suggest that not only does Doflamingo revel in leading people, but many of his superiors wholeheartedly trust him and take pleasure in serving under him.
5. “Justice Will Prevail, You Say? But Of Course It Will! Whoever Wins This War Becomes Justice!”
The Truth About The World Government

- Context: Doflamingo’s thoughts on justice, prefaced by one of the few actions he is seen directly taking to aid the World Government: fighting in Marineford.
- Full Quote: “Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what’s wrong and what’s right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!”
I find this quote to be one of the most insightful in the series. It suggests that the concept of justice, as well as the law, is not inherently defined by what’s morally right, but rather by those who hold power at any given moment. Doflamingo, once a child unacquainted with war and pampered as a World Noble, was taught he was a deity and everything else was his plaything. However, when he lost the power that shielded him from accountability, he and his family became targets of those who had suffered under the rule of the World Nobles during their darkest days – a time I never witnessed tranquility.
Reflecting on my diverse upbringing, I’ve come to realize how profoundly our past experiences mold our perspectives, particularly on complex ideas like “justice.” Despite retaining a stubborn sense of entitlement over everything, I learned pragmatism – acknowledging the existence of forces greater than myself. Whether they were nobles or commoners, these powerful figures wielded the power to define what was ‘just’ in their domains. This adaptable mindset has enabled me to negotiate with formidable pirates such as Kaido and even serve under the World Government, holding the title of one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
The Marines and the World Government, along with the World Nobles they serve, are not simply righteous in their actions; rather, they often act in ways that serve their own interests, which can be concealed by the power they wield. Doflamingo’s disregard for the justice upheld by the Marines during the Summit War allowed him to view the conflict more as a source of amusement than a serious matter. History is often shaped by those who hold power, but for a power-hungry villain like Doflamingo, any semblance of justice is merely another tool for accumulating authority.
