As a dedicated anime and gaming enthusiast, living in Japan and following the latest trends closely, I am genuinely thrilled about Uniqlo’s new collaboration with Kenshi Yonezu! This collection not only showcases some of my favorite songs from recent years but also features artwork by the talented artist himself.
Global fans of anime and gaming have turned to Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo as their preferred destination for quirky fashion items. With a focus on affordability, Uniqlo frequently partners with popular gaming and anime series for t-shirt designs. Their wide network of physical stores worldwide, coupled with an online store, makes it effortless to obtain these stylish pieces. Past collaborations by Uniqlo include iconic franchises such as Pokémon, Attack on Titan, Chainsaw Man, and Final Fantasy. Current offerings also feature designs from One Piece and Kaiju No. 8.
As a huge fan of both anime and Japanese music, I’m absolutely thrilled about the latest collaboration announced this month! I’ve been following Kenshi Yonezu for quite some time now, especially since his tracks have graced some of my favorite anime series in recent years. The fact that this new line is based on his popular songs makes it even more exciting for me.
The Kenshi Yonezu Collection at Uniqlo
A Little Something for Everyone
In Kenshi Yonezu’s collection, all t-shirt designs are inspired by his songs or singles from games, anime, and his latest album “Stray Sheep.” There are a total of six unique designs, each available in a different color. Notably, the popular song “Kick Back,” known for its opening theme in last year’s Chainsaw Man, is represented on a white t-shirt with Denji as the main character. This song was the first Japanese song to earn a gold certification from the Record Industry Assocation of America (RIAA).
As a gamer, I’ve come across an awesome collection of gaming-themed shirts, and one that caught my eye is based on the 2022 hit song “Pop Song” by Yonezu. This track was used in a PlayStation commercial, and get this – Yonezu even drew the character you see on the shirt! In the “Play Has No Limits” commercial, he actually played that very character.
In addition to Final Fantasy XVI, the game’s beloved character Torgal, depicted as a wolf, is also included in its representation. Remarkably, this illustration was created by Yonezu himself and features on the back of a black t-shirt, with the game’s emblem displayed prominently on the front. It should be noted that Yonezu is responsible for singing the Japanese theme song for the game, titled “Tsuki Wo Miteita-Moongazing.” This brings us to five out of six shirts in this collection, all boasting designs rooted in Kenichi Yonezu’s artistic contributions and created by him personally. However, the last shirt in the series holds a unique appeal for Japanese fans – it stands out as something particularly significant.
Miyazaki’s First Uniqlo Piece in Japan
It’s About Time
A specific item in the Kenichi Yonezu Uniqlo lineup has Japanese fans buzzing, and it’s the one inspired by Studio Ghibli’s latest acclaimed film, “The Boy and the Heron“. The t-shirt features a drawing by Hayao Miyazaki, showcasing the main character Mahito seated at a desk, engrossed in a copy of the book “How Do You Live“, which served as the basis for the film. Kenishi Yonezu sang the track “Spinning Globe”/”Chikyugi”, heard during the movie’s end credits, and the cover art for that single is what adorns the t-shirt.
What is making everyone so excited is the fact that this is the first time that Studio Ghibli has had any shirts for sale at Uniqlo in Japan. Depsite being a Japanese company, Uniqlo has only had Studio Ghibli shirts for sale at its stores in Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore before. Studio Ghibli may be one of the most famous Japanese animation studios in the world, but they never collaborated with any Uniqlo shirts in their home country. This special shirt from The Boy and the Heron for the Kenshi Yonezu collection is truly special because it is opening the door for Studio Ghibli to potentially have more shirts for sale in Japan in the future.
As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about the recent announcement of the Kenshi Yonezu collection in Japan! However, there’s no word yet on whether these fabulous shirts will be available internationally. But given that Uniqlo has previously brought gaming and anime merchandise to their global stores, let’s keep our fingers crossed that this collection follows suit. If you happen to be in Japan post-mid September, you can grab them either online or in-store for 1,990 yen ($12.85) each. Fingers crossed we get a chance to snag these amazing designs soon!
