Summary
- Incorporating factions in open-world games is essential for player choice, offering bonuses, new endings, and enemy variety.
- Players often must align with a faction, forging alliances between rival groups, to achieve in-game goals and determine the outcomes.
- Managing relationships with various factions impacts the game’s ending, allowing for diverse outcomes and alliances in the open-world setting.
In many open-world video games, factions play a significant role. They can serve as sources of enemy variety, options for players with rewards and alternate endings, or just add depth to the game world. Regardless of their function, designing an open-world game often involves a wide array of factions and groups. These groups might be allies or fierce rivals at times.
In most video games like Skyrim and Cyberpunk 2077, players are often pitted on one side or another, which can occasionally work against them. Given that real-life conflicts seldom have a sole resolver, this alignment is usually plausible. However, some games allow for the illusion of single-handedly solving conflicts, usually through an external threat or powerful adversary, but sometimes it’s all about the player making the correct decisions at crucial moments.
5. Mafia 3
Gangland Alliances
The game, titled “Mafia III,” is situated in a city modeled after 1960s New Orleans, called New Bordeaux. In this story, Vietnam War veteran Lincoln Clay embarks on a mission of vengeance against the powerful Italian Mobster, Sal Marcano. Upon his return from war, Clay and his comrades are double-crossed by the Marcanos following a bank heist. After recuperating from his injuries, Clay forms an uneasy partnership with the heads of various city gangs. Among these leaders are Vito Scaletta, an exiled Mafioso from “Mafia II,” Thomas Burke, an Irish boss whose son was one of Marcano’s victims, and Cassandra, a Haitian mobster.
In their advance through sections of New Bordeaux previously controlled by the Marcanos, players must determine how to allocate resources among the city’s factions. These rival groups could potentially betray each other and the player in the future. However, if the player distributes territory justly during gameplay, they can create a lasting union between all three gangs. The outcome depends on the player’s choices: will Lincoln stay in the city to avenge his fallen friends, or step aside and let the gangs govern themselves? As long as multiple factions persist, it appears that the alliance remains intact.
4. Baldur’s Gate 3
Fighting A God Together
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players experience an extraordinary degree of autonomy, as the game offers a wide range of possibilities. It could unfold as a classic heroic tale with you and your party, or it might transform into a riotous rampage where you and your companions, arguably, match the villains in terms of questionable behavior. This diversity culminates in an intriguing climax, where factions and allies from throughout the game rally to support you, despite their usual enmity towards each other under different circumstances.
In this game, characters find themselves plagued by a tiny Mind Flayer parasite called a Tadpole. If left unchecked, it could transform them into terrifying Mind Flayers when mature. At the peak of the adventure, players confront the Elder Brain, essentially the Mind Flayer queen. As they fight her, friends amassed during the narrative jump in to help. These allies provide benefits ranging from minor enhancements and skills, all the way up to summoning a force of warriors. The Emperor, an independent Mind Flayer, can join forces with Githyanki warriors, who are sworn enemies of Mind Flayers. The Gur, nomads known for hunting monsters, can team up with Astarion, a vampire. Having built strong relationships with enough potential allies can significantly ease the climactic battle.
3. Fallout 4
Creating A Peaceful Wasteland
As they exit Vault 111 in search of their abducted child, players might not anticipate that the narrative of Fallout 4 will escalate into a conflict determining the destiny of the Commonwealth. However, it won’t take long before they encounter the initial faction of Fallout 4, known as the Minutemen. Players are compelled to form an alliance with one of three groups: The Brotherhood Of Steel, Minutemen, or Railroad, in order to access the Institute and locate their son. Throughout their journey, they will discover that their grown son is now in charge of the Institute. At this point, players must choose whether to join the Institute or rally another ally to stand against it.
The choice of faction by the player significantly impacts the survival of others. If the player chooses the Brotherhood, Institute, or Railroad, they’re essentially doomed because the player must eliminate the rest. But unlike other endings, the Minutemen ending doesn’t require this. Instead, if the player rises to the rank of General in the Minutemen, they could potentially join the Brotherhood. Alternatively, they can establish a fragile peace within the Commonwealth, destroying the Institute while leaving the Railroad and Brotherhood intact. Regardless of the choice, the factions will persist in the Commonwealth, with the Minutemen serving as a neutral force maintaining order.
2. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Survival Means Cooperation
The “Mass Effect: Legendary Edition” is a collection that includes all three games from the trilogy, which tell one connected story where each game’s events significantly influence what follows. In this narrative, humanity has ventured into space and is now part of a cosmic alliance. A distress call sets off the story, leading to the uncovering of an impending catastrophic danger, known as the Reapers. As the games unfold, these Reapers come increasingly closer to launching an attack on and harvesting sentient life across the galaxy. The threat is so severe that players are tasked with mobilizing every military force in the cosmos to try and halt their invasion, which eventually reaches Earth.
It’s not as simple as it may seem. In this game, the Reapers are attacking various planets at once, prompting their inhabitants to prioritize self-defense first. The protagonist needs to foster goodwill with a multitude of species throughout the series. Additionally, forming alliances between enemies such as the Geth and Quarians, who have been feuding since the Geth rebelled against their creators, is essential. Similarly, bridging the divide between the Krogans and Salarians, whose strained relationship stems from the Salarian-imposed genetic infertility on the Krogans, proves challenging. However, making these alliances depends greatly on the choices made throughout the three games.
1. Fallout New Vegas
Finding Friends At The End Of The World
In simpler terms, “New Vegas” is a game that emphasizes player choice in a setting that blends sci-fi and western genres. There are four primary groups, along with a dozen smaller ones, and multiple companions, all of which can influence the final outcome for the player. The choices made by the player regarding the major faction they align with can lead to smaller factions joining forces, even if there’s usually animosity between them. However, the Legion will ultimately wipe out the minor factions, regardless of any temporary alliances. The other factions, on the other hand, are generally more open to forming alliances.
If a player chooses to align with the NCR, they might persuade longstanding adversaries such as the Great Khans, Brotherhood of Steel, and Enclave Remnants to unite with them during the decisive Battle of Hoover Dam. Although the NCR initially intends to annihilate these factions, a skilled player can change their minds. If they opt for Mr. House instead, only the Brotherhood of Steel needs to be eliminated because he sees their control over technology as a threat to his Securitron army. However, if they side with Yes Man, there’s no compulsion for any minor faction to join them, but the player can form friendships with them independently.
