On October 3, Unity notified developers whose games, released since 2017, were built using its engine about a recently discovered flaw in the engine’s code. While there’s currently no proof that this Unity engine vulnerability has been exploited, the warning has prompted some game developers to quickly update their affected games.
First launched in 2005, the Unity engine powers popular games like Hollow Knight: Silksong, Subnautica, and Among Us, making it a leading choice for game developers because it supports both computers and mobile devices. In 2023, Unity proposed a new fee structure that caused controversy, leading to some developers considering alternatives like Godot and Unreal Engine. However, Unity reversed these changes in 2024 following widespread criticism from the gaming community. Currently, Unity offers licenses through a standard subscription, and the Unity Personal version remains free for those earning up to $200,000 in revenue.
A Unity Engine Security Flaw Has Developers Scrambling To Implement A Fix
However, the Unity engine is once again facing attention, but this time due to a serious issue. Reports indicate a security flaw exists in Unity versions 2017.1 and newer, including Unity 6. This problem impacts games running on Windows, Android, Linux, and macOS. The weakness is located in Unity’s core Runtime code, potentially allowing attackers to steal confidential data from a compromised computer. Fortunately, Unity says they haven’t found any proof of the vulnerability being used maliciously and have already provided developers with the necessary updates to fix it. In addition to Unity’s efforts, Microsoft Defender can identify and prevent the vulnerability on Windows, and Valve is adding its own safeguards through the Steam Client.
Obsidian Entertainment announced it’s temporarily taking down Grounded 2, Pentiment, Avowed, and Pillars of Eternity from all online stores. This is happening while they work on a solution for a security problem with Unity. Obsidian explained that this step is to keep its players safe, and to give its team the time needed to put in and test the security updates Unity provides. The company didn’t say when the games would be available again, and asked for fans’ understanding. Other games, like Among Us and Marvel Snap, have already released updates to fix the Unity security issue.

So, because Unity powers a ton of games on pretty much every platform, the list of games hit by this security issue isn’t complete yet. Honestly, it’s still up in the air just how many games are going to need updates in the next few days. It’s a bit worrying, but hopefully, developers will get things patched up quickly! We’ll just have to wait and see what the full impactis.
