Wizards are renowned for being both challenging and highly rewarding in tabletop role-playing games. They have an extensive collection of spells at their disposal, but they must carefully manage resources like spell slots or Mana. Similarly, Sunderfolk‘s Arcanist class isn’t any different. It boasts some of the most potent damage-dealing spells among the game’s six classes, yet requires players to utilize their Fate Deck and abilities to accumulate enough Mana for casting. If you’re seeking a more intricate playstyle, Sunderfolk‘s Arcanist is definitely worth considering.
In a chat for Game Rant Forward, we chatted with various members of the Sunderfolk team about their character classes. Narrative designer Neo Zhang emphasized that the Arcanist embodies the strategic wizard in gameplay, while campaign designer Kara Centell-Dunk shared her excitement about how stylish and impressive the Arcanist can be (particularly during its Ultimate ability).
Sunderfolk Arcanist Abilities Explained
Much like a Wizard in the game “Dungeons and Dragons,” the character known as an Arcanist is scholarly, having spent most of their life delving into the mysteries of magic. This character can be likened to a cunning crow, renowned for its intelligence and problem-solving skills. Zhang describes the Arcanist as “the friend who approaches spellcasting like doing taxes – meticulously planning each move, managing resources, and carefully positioning everyone.” The Arcanist’s equipment revolves around Mana production, which they can generate both naturally and by activating specific abilities. As they progress through levels, they unlock various abilities such as:
- Thunderclap: Deals single-target damage, then pushes the enemy away.
- Stargate: Teleports the Arcanist and also allows them to swap other characters’ positions.
- Gravity Nexus: Pulls in enemies within three hexes of the Arcanist and deals area-of-effect damage.
- Mana Spring: The Arcanist regains Mana based on the number of adjacent characters.
- Aetherize: Deals powerful single-target damage, but requires a lot of mana.
- Mirror Shatter: Sacrifices previously created decoys to deal large amounts of damage.
- Chaos Beam: A powerful line attack that hits multiple enemies.
The Arcanist Has The Power Of The Stars
Each of the six character types in Sunderfolk possesses a unique Ultimate Ability that can be activated at the opportune moment. The Arcanist’s special ability, Starfall, unleashes an area damage effect and causes Confusion on every target hit. What sets it apart is that the adversary right in the center of the attack zone gets Stunned. This power resembles some of Dungeons & Dragons’ most potent Wizard spells such as Sunburst. Centell-Dunk couldn’t help but express his admiration for how impressive Starfall looks when executed.
The depicted character is a magical user who closely follows the pattern of a well-studied spellcasting character stereotype. Even his glasses, which are always worn, have an intense glint reminiscent of anime in its climactic sequences when the character unleashes their most powerful spell.
The Arcanist’s Fate Deck Explained
Characters in the game ‘Sunderfolk’ don’t use a 20-sided die to calculate the damage from their abilities. Instead, they draw a card from the Fate Deck, which may result in positive, neutral, or negative outcomes. The Arcanist class heavily depends on their Fate Deck for mana regeneration and other useful abilities. Moreover, the Arcanist can employ their Fate Deck to generate additional distractions during combat, weaken opponents, and boost their Strength stat to maximize the impact of skills such as Aetherize and Chaos Beam.
The game named “Sunderfolk” is crafted for enjoyable multiplayer sessions, mimicking the experience of traditional tabletop role-playing games like “Dungeons and Dragons”, but now in a digital format. Developers Dreamhaven and Secret Door have made it a point to make this game approachable for both newcomers and seasoned veterans of tabletop RPGs. The Arcanist character, in particular, will be a delight for long-term TTRPG enthusiasts, as it’s a more challenging class that demands strategic planning and careful management of mana to utilize effectively. However, those who master the Arcanist’s Fate Deck and abilities can generate an impressive amount of mana, making the class incredibly potent in battles against the numerous enemies found in “Sunderfolk”.
