In the game Final Fantasy 9, the Limit Break system, referred to as “trance,” possesses several appealing aspects. However, it’s hindered by a significant drawback that often lowers its position in the preference of many players. During trance, characters exhibit a striking aura and are endowed with enhanced stats and unique abilities capable of annihilating opponents.
In the narrative, the mechanic becomes an integral part. Enemies escalate the danger level when they realize that their feelings are the means to accessing more potent abilities, or when team members cannot utilize them because of emotional numbing. The main issue with trance is that once its gauge is full, it activates regardless of whether it’s beneficial or not, making players frustrated as it triggers in a casual fight instead of during a crucial battle.
5. Full ATB Attacks – Final Fantasy 13

As a dedicated fan, I must say that Final Fantasy 13 stands out with its distinctive flair, and this is vividly demonstrated through its limit break system. In this game, each character can unleash their own extraordinary “Full ATB Skills,” which are powered by spending all of their action points simultaneously. Unlike other games where such moves might only be triggered when characters are low on health or under heavy attack, these in Final Fantasy 13 could be seen as the ultimate, final stand actions in certain circumstances.
In simpler terms, you can unlock full ATB (Active Time Battle) attacks after reaching a specific point in the story, which feature unique animations tailored to each character. These attacks are particularly powerful when used against staggered enemies. The player has more control over these moves, making a full-on attack feel thrilling but risky unless timed correctly.
4. Quickening – Final Fantasy 12
Chaining Devastating Attacks for Maximum Carnage
In the same vein as its distinctive take on the traditional combat system found in the series, Final Fantasy 12 also offered a fresh perspective on limit breaks through Quickenings. This innovative feature enables characters to launch devastating “Concurrences.” Unlike conventional limit breaks that are triggered by damage or desperation, Quickenings depend on accumulated “Mist Charges” and involve a fast-paced mini-game where players must swiftly connect attacks in sequence.
By skillfully stacking Quickennings, you can create incredibly potent combinations resulting in devastating final blows such as Tornado or Inferno, which can obliterate the game’s most formidable enemies. Yet, failing to seize a chain opportunity could prematurely end a Quickennecing, introducing an element of high-risk, high-reward into what might appear to be an excessively calculated combat system.

The Classic System That Redefined ATB Combat
In the epic game “Final Fantasy 7”, it’s this system that popularized the concept known as Limit Breaks and gave it its name. When characters in the game sustain damage, their Limit meter gradually fills up. Once full, they can unleash powerful, memorable special attacks. By the end of the game, each character will have a complete arsenal of Limit Breaks at their disposal, assuming players have unlocked stronger versions either by using Limit Breaks or defeating enemies a specific number of times.
In the game “Final Fantasy 7”, the topmost Limit Breaks are unveiled by discovering manuals scattered throughout the storyline. Apart from Tifa’s boxing-themed slot machine and Vincent’s beastly transformations, the Limit Break system in this game is straightforward, straightforward, and easy to grasp. Most party members possess unique limit break mechanics that demand precise timing (like Squall’s Renzokuken and Selphie’s Slots), memorizing button sequences (Zell’s Duel combos), or additional knowledge from field studies (Quistis’ blue mage monster abilities). These factors contribute to more dynamic and engaging battles. Although the junction system allows each character some degree of customization, their limit breaks are a notable trait that gives each character distinct personality traits.

Personalized, Strategic, and Deeply Satisfying Power Moves
In Final Fantasy 10, the Overdrive system stands out as one of the most flexible interpretations of Limit Breaks within the series. Instead of solely charging through damage received, characters can fill their Overdrive gauge by inflicting damage, vanquishing foes, or assisting teammates. Consequently, players have the freedom to decide how and when to amass it and unleash its power.
Performing Overdrives frequently incorporates mini-games or time-based controls, giving them a more engaging and interactive feel, while minimizing delays due to animations. Nailing a flawless Overdrive at just the right instant is incredibly rewarding (and often crucial for survival against the most challenging bosses in Final Fantasy X), maintaining an optimal blend of complexity and ease.
