In the widely read digital comic series called “Solo Leveling“, there is a unique ranking system for hunters who are tasked with clearing and securing dangerous dungeons. The story primarily focuses on Sung Jin-Woo, formerly recognized as the “Weakest Hunter in the World,” because of his extraordinary lack of strength as a hunter.
Incidentally, Jin-Woo stumbles upon the System, a tool that lets him advance in rank and grow stronger as a Hunter. Upon reaching a particular level, the System bestows upon him the Shadow Extraction skill, an ability to conjure the spirits of fallen warriors as strong shadows. The main character in ‘Solo Leveling’ harnesses this power to build a formidable army; however, some of these shadows exhibit exceptional strength compared to his other minions.
This article contains spoilers from the Solo Leveling manhwa.
10. Tank
Alpha Ice Bear of the Red Gate
- Abilities: Colossal Strength and High Attack Power
- Shadow Rank: Knight
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 100 / Episode 15
Readers of Solo Leveling first encountered Tank when the protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, came across a Red Gate. At first, it was believed by the guild exploring the Dungeon that they had entered a C-Ranked one. However, this assumption proved to be false as their location shifted to a significantly more perilous area following entry. To everyone’s astonishment, the Red Gate housed formidable Ice Bears and Ice Elves instead.
Later, Kim-Chul, the top-tier hunter, swiftly dismissed party members of a lower rank C or below from accompanying them. Yet, Jin-Woo couldn’t let this opportunity for advancement slip by. He dared to tread in the Ice Bear territory and eliminated every one of them, even their leader. Post eliminating the Ice Bears, Jin-Woo incorporated their powerful leader into his Shadow Army, affectionately dubbing him “Tank” due to his immense attack strength.
9. Kaisel
Kaisellin; Mount of the Monarch of White Flames

- Abilities: Immense Speed, Flight, and Enhanced Senses
- Shadow Rank: Knight
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 88 / N/A
While advancing in the Demon Realm, Jin-Woo encountered a Wyvern named Kaisel during his leveling process. Interestingly, in the Demon Realm, Jin-Woo was unable to employ his Shadow Extraction skill against demons. However, this rule no longer applied when he came across Kaisellin, who turned out to be Baran’s flying steed.
Following an extraordinary fight, Jin-Woo overcame Demon King Baran, whereas Iron, one of his underlings, dispatched Kaisellin. However, the lead character utilized his Shadow Recall ability to resurrect Kaisellin as a shadowy form, which he then named “Kaisel.” Although Kaisel’s power was not emphasized in the comic, his ability to fly and heightened senses put him at the pinnacle of Jin-Woo’s army’s hierarchy.
8. Jima
A-Rank Boss Naga

- Abilities: Size Manipulation, and Regeneration
- Shadow Rank: Elite Knight
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 122 / N/A
In the series “Solo Leveling“, Jima isn’t frequently featured, but when it appears, its power is undeniably strong. Sung Jin-Woo encountered this powerful magical creature during a raid conducted by the Ahjin Guild. At first, the Hunters found it difficult to defeat this beast due to its immense strength and magical abilities. With a trident in hand, Jima resembles a giant sea serpent because of its colossal size.
The predicament of the Hunters seemed impossible to overcome until Jin-Woo intervened. He vanquished the monster and transformed it into his Shadow minion, Jima, afterwards. Following the battle, Jin-Woo uncovered that Jima boasted a size-changing ability thanks to its magical might. This endows the creature with great significance among Jin-Woo’s shadows.
7. Iron
A-Rank Hunter Kim Chul

- Abilities: Regeneration and Shout of Provocation (taunting ability)
- Shadow Rank: Elite Knight
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 54 / Episode 15
In my thrilling journey through the Ice Bear Saga, it wasn’t just Tank who proved to be a coveted prize; Iron was on the list as well! After our heroic party dared to venture through the Red Gate and were ambushed by the cunning Ice Elves, we were forced to split up. Our seasoned A-Rank leader wisely decreed that any member ranked below C-Rank should remain behind in clearing the Dungeon, ensuring we wouldn’t become a burden on our team.
Following a failed infiltration, Kim Chul – a high-ranking member from the White Guild – found that the overlooked party members had not only survived, but seemed to have enjoyed their time within the Dungeon. This revelation sparked anger and envy within him, causing him to lunge at Jin-Woo in a fit of jealousy. Tragically, it was Igris who ended Kim Chul’s life instead. The story’s protagonist, however, demonstrated his extraordinary abilities by reviving the slain Hunter, christening him as “Iron.
6. Greed
S-Ranker Hwang Dongsoo

- Abilities: Enhanced Strength, Regeneration and Conversation
- Shadow Rank: General
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 147 / N/A
In simpler terms, Hwang Dong-Soo, a high-ranking hunter from the Scavenger Guild, had a dark desire (greed) lurking within him. He harbored intense animosity towards Sung Jin-Woo due to his belief that Jin-Woo was responsible for his brother’s death. However, when he realized that Jin-Woo possessed abilities far surpassing his own, Dong-Soo devised a clever strategy (roundabout method) to eliminate him by involving Thomas Andre in the situation.
In the story of ‘Solo Leveling’, a turn of events unfolds as Jin-Woo publicly humiliates Thomas Andre, which seemingly dismantles Hwang Dong-Soo’s plan. Although it’s not explicitly shown that Jin-Woo kills Hwang Dong-Soo, the context implies this possibility. Later on, Jin-Woo employs his Shadow Extract on the S-Rank Hunter, giving him the name “Greed.
5. Tusk
Kargalgan, The Shaman High Orc

- Abilities: Gravity Magic, Hymn of Protection, Hymn of Frenzy, Hymn of Giants, Hymn of Blazing Fire, Hymn of Rage, Regeneration, amongst others
- Shadow Rank: Commander
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 75 / Episode 18
Originally, Tusk held command as the Chief of the High Orcs within the Hunter Guild’s Dungeon. However, during a raid orchestrated by a top-tier Hunter, tensions escalated when the High Orcs were unveiled. After a fierce engagement, it became clear that the hunters could no longer continue fighting, prompting them to yield.
Upon my surrender, I found myself face-to-face with the formidable High Orc Shaman, Kargalgan. His sinister intentions were made clear when he boasted about his plan to slay the Hunters for amusement. But something within me stirred as I watched this spectacle unfold. I couldn’t stand idly by and let such a horrific act occur.
With every ounce of strength coursing through my veins, I leapt into action, challenging Kargalgan in combat. The battle was fierce, but eventually, I managed to strike the fatal blow, taking his life. However, destiny had other plans for this twisted soul. In an instant, Kargalgan rose again, reborn as Tusk – a monstrous Shadow with powers beyond comprehension.
Tusk possesses magic that defies explanation, from Gravity manipulation to telepathic abilities that leave me awestruck. He’s an unstoppable force, and I cannot help but feel both fear and admiration for this new adversary that has emerged from the shadows. The battle between us is far from over, and I am eager to see what other secrets Tusk holds as our paths continue to cross in the world of darkness.
4. Igris
The Blood-Red Commander Idris

- Abilities: Regeneration, Conversation, Immense Strength and Telekinesis
- Shadow Rank: Marshal
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 45 / Episode 12
In a challenging dungeon, Sung Jin-Woo encountered Igris, a crimson, knightly figure whom he battled following a grueling fight. Within this labyrinth, Jin-Woo faced numerous hurdles, including Necromancers who continually summoned troops to assault him. Yet, once he unveiled the Necromancers’ scheme, he annihilated them all and acquired the ability known as Shadow Extraction.
In a different wording, here’s how we can express that:
Jin-Woo employs this talent to resuscitate the red knight he encountered at the Dungeon’s entrance, whom he named “Igris.” Consequently, Igris became one of Jin-Woo’s initial Shadows. Similar to other potent figures in his army, Igris’ power expanded throughout Solo Leveling, eventually earning the capacity for speech once he ascended to Marshal Rank.
3. Beru
The Ant King

- Abilities: Regeneration, Conversation, Immense Speed, Immense Strength, High Durability, Healing Magic, Flight and Skill Absorption
- Shadow Rank: Marshal
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 105 / N/A
During the “Jeju Island Arc,” Beru became a formidable minion under Jin-Woo’s control. Boasting strength comparable or exceeding that of S-Rank Hunters, Beru proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with. In a stunning display of power, he singlehandedly defeated Goto Ryuji, a figure known as Japan’s strongest Hunter, and left an S-Rank Hunter trembling in fear, proclaiming that Beru was beyond defeat.
But once Beru encounters Sung Jin-Woo, who outmatches him in power and agility, Beru’s unchecked rule comes to an end. In the Webtoon, it is only after Beru starts following Jin-Woo that his healing powers are disclosed.
2. Kamish
Humanity’s Greatest Calamity

- Abilities: Dragon’s Fear, Immense Strength, and Dragon’s Breath
- Shadow Rank: Marshal
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 115 / N/A
In a bid to have Sung Jin-Woo become one of their Hunters, the United States made an attempt at persuasion. Yet, before he consented, Jin-Woo asked for a meeting with Kamish, a Dragon that not even Thomas Andre could subdue alone. After this request was granted, Jin-Woo employed Shadow Extraction on Kamish, reanimating the formidable creature.
Though under the control of Jin-Woo, the Dragon exhibited autonomous behavior, nearly taking the lives of humans close to its master. Tragically, Kamish didn’t survive as Jin-Woo’s shadow for long due to his prolonged death. Yet, the fleeting display of power from the shadow suggests that he holds a high rank, similar to Marshal.
1. Bellion
The Right Hand of Ashborn

- Abilities: Immense Durability, Colossal Strength, Immense Speed, Regeneration and Conversation
- Shadow Rank: Grand Marshal
- Manhwa / Anime Debut: Chapter 166 / N/A
Bellion, who was once a prominent figure in Ashborn’s army, the Shadow Monarch, has been an unencountered shadow for Jin-Woo since he received Ashborn’s final gifts during the Monarch War. This shift occurred when Ashborn declared Sung Jin-Woo as his successor, at which point Bellion and the entire Shadow Monarch’s army acknowledged their new master.
In a brief skirmish against Beru, Bellion demonstrated his power once more. Wielding his elongating blade, he effortlessly overpowered the shadow of Marshal rank. Despite Beru’s persistent attempts to counterattack, they had no effect on the unfazed Bellion, who seemed entirely unharmed by the assault.
