One significant topic that runs through “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” is the idea of family, with a strong emphasis on the importance of chosen family. The game reinforces this theme in its gameplay by introducing allies who can be recruited throughout Japan. These individuals eventually become part of Naoe and Yasuke’s secret assassins league, known as Kakushiba ikki, creating their own small alliance within the larger brotherhood.
In the heat of combat, Naoe has six distinct allies she can call upon. Each of these allies possesses a unique blend of active and passive abilities. Players need to select wisely, as they’re only allowed to summon one ally initially, with the option to summon two later on. To maximize effectiveness, choose allies that amplify Naoe’s strengths and compensate for her vulnerabilities during battle.
6. Ibuki
A Plain But Effective Swordsman
Among the half-dozen potential allies we have, Ibuki stands out as the one with the least exciting skill set, yet their utility cannot be denied. Ibuki is a classic swordsman who specializes in katana combat, sticking to traditional fighting styles.
This character deals typical, impact damage per strike, with the damage amount being moderate. His skill to breach enemies’ armor around his summon proves beneficial on challenging levels, though not significantly more so than other allies’ abilities. Still, having an additional combatant and a source of distraction is always advantageous, even if it’s not particularly flashy.
5. Katsuhime
Fun, Chaotic Melee Combatant
Despite initially being portrayed as a ranged expert, Katsuhime’s combat role surprisingly lies in close-quarter attacks. Her unique ability involves triggering explosions that cause enemies to become dazed, making the positioning of her summon crucial for maximizing her effectiveness.
In battles, Katsuhime discharges her teppo at short distances, yet during actual fighting, she predominantly employs kicks to push off opponents for reloading purposes. Her combat role mirrors Ibuki’s to some extent and is less effective compared to most other allies, but her bullets bouncing off surfaces add an attractive visual flair to the fights.
4. Oni-yuri
A Powerful Cloud Of Sleep
Based on various playstyles, the character Oni-yuri can serve multiple purposes, but her standout trait is undeniably her initial, active skill. By releasing a cloud of purplish sleeping gas in a chosen location, it appears there’s no cap on the number of enemies within that area who instantly fall asleep.
If skillfully executed, players have the potential to charge through a crowd of foes, gather them together, then, with a swift summoning of Oni-yuri, simultaneously lull all enemies into a deep slumber. Following this, it becomes an easy task of stealthily and cautiously eliminating each sleeping adversary, one at a time. In essence, the summoned Oni-Yuri can transform any given area into a string of effortless kills.
3. Gennojo
A One-Man Utility Belt
Among all of Naoe’s associates, Gennojo stands out uniquely because his function doesn’t involve direct combat. Instead, he provides passive enhancements to Naoe’s stealth capabilities, ensuring she remains unnoticed and avoiding potential confrontations by keeping conflicts at bay.
Gennojo’s main active skill launches a stunning projectile to disorient enemies, helping them lose track of him. However, it’s his passive skills that truly shine. They ensure that enemies can’t detect Naoe, and prevent other servants from revealing Naoe’s presence. This combination makes Gennojo an ideal companion for maintaining long periods of stealth.
2. Yaya
Endlessly Useful Knockback Power
In the game, Yaya is often one of the first allies players choose to recruit. In many aspects, she proves to be an exceptional ally for most of the gameplay. During battle, you can call upon her to knock over a chosen opponent. Throughout her presence in combat, she persistently uses shoves and kicks to keep the enemy down.
Yaya, a one-trick wonder of sorts, may seem limited with minimal damage output and few abilities other than her knock-down attacks. However, these are the very skills that make her an indispensable teammate. Any foe she knocks down is essentially a sitting duck for a ground attack, which typically results in a kill. By utilizing Naoe’s agility tactfully, players can spend battles dodging until Yaya topples an enemy, then striking with a ground attack, followed by repeating this sequence for a relatively effortless victory.
1. Yagoro
Overpowered Instant Kills
As a dedicated Assassin’s Creed: Shadows fan, I must confess that recruiting Yagoro is no walk in the park – it demands patience and persistence. But let me tell you, the effort is more than rewarded! This elusive ally has an extraordinary ability: he can swiftly eliminate an opponent with as few as three health bars, and once upgraded, he can take down two enemies, each with just five health bars to spare. Simply put, Yagoro’s worth multiplies exponentially in the heat of battle!
In most parts of the game, except for story bosses, almost all enemies (excluding exceptions like samurai, ronin, and larger ones) typically possess five or fewer life bars. This means Yagoro’s ability usually grants him two instant kills, even on challenging enemies. When paired with Naoe’s assassination technique, Yagoro can quickly eliminate groups of three enemies, a task that has traditionally been difficult in the stealth segments of Assassin’s Creed.
