In the expansion pack for The Sims 4 named “Businesses and Hobbies”, a new skill called Pottery is introduced, providing an artistic avenue for those Sims who take pleasure in crafting. Much like Woodworking, Pottery enables Sims to produce both ornamental and practical items with a touch of personalization. The Pottery skill has 10 levels to advance through, and as Sims enhance their proficiency, they can unlock fresh designs and diverse techniques, such as Kintsugi.
For aspiring entrepreneur Sims, the Pottery career path offers an opportunity to establish and run a pottery workshop. The handmade goods can be marketed for a profit, with superior craftsmanship commanding higher prices in Simoleons. This is an ideal choice for creative Sims who are interested in the Businesses and Hobbies extension. Here’s all you need to know about acquiring this skill and making the most of it.
How to Improve Pottery Skill
Improving the Art of Pottery becomes relatively straightforward due to the addition of various helpful tools. Activities like shaping ceramics on a Pottery Wheel and subsequently glazing them in the Pottery Kiln are key steps for Sims to hone this skill. While molding pottery requires more time, it offers the most significant progress. However, if you’re seeking a budget-friendly approach and plan to sell your handiwork, make sure to glaze each item you create as well, since this process can help save Simoleons.
Furthermore, if a Sim owns some Clay, they can sculpt it to enhance their Pottery ability. Traditional methods of boosting skills, like buying skill books or visiting certain locations, work as well. It’s important to mention that using the Pottery Wheel and choosing the Pottery option will help a Sim level up their skill more quickly.
Pottery Skill Levels and Perks

Enhancing the Pottery skill significantly enables your Sims to discover new ceramic items to create as they progress. At level 7, Sims acquire the knack for mending cracked clay items and turning them into Kintsugi-inspired pieces, which adds a stunning and distinctive flair to damaged objects. Upon reaching level 10, they can apply a protective, unbreakable glaze over decorative glazing on their creations if desired. This added layer of durability proves useful as items can break easily due to factors like pets or mischievous Sims. It is important to note that advancement does not introduce additional decorative glazing options. Instead, previously repaired Kintsugi pieces can still be given the unbreakable coating later on.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that the Pottery skill, while it doesn’t significantly affect the selling price of my crafted items, does play a crucial role in determining the quality of those items. This means that Sims with higher Pottery levels can produce more valuable objects, earning them more Simoleons. What’s more, reaching certain levels unlocks unique social interactions. For instance, at level 5, my Sim can mentor others in Pottery, helping to nurture their skills and growth in this craft.
In The Sims game, certain objects that players can craft, like vases, pots, stoves, and tea sets, serve both aesthetic and practical purposes. This makes the Pottery Skill an appealing option for players who enjoy creativity, as it offers a variety of uses. There are ten distinct glazing options to choose from, along with 14 different items that can be created.
