The highly acclaimed turn-based RPG, Sea of Stars, has unveiled its initial, possibly final, significant expansion pack titled Throes of the Watchmaker. This game has been garnering positive feedback on Steam with a Very Positive rating and a remarkable 97% score on OpenCritic. The reasons are not hard to find – Sabotage Studios launched it in 2023, and since then, players and critics have been captivated by its enchanting art style, music, and combat mechanics, as well as its absorbing narrative and appealing cast of characters.

In November 2024, Sabotage rolled out the “The Dawn of Equinox” update for the game “Sea of Stars.” This significant update included several highly-anticipated features. It introduced a three-player cooperative mode, allowing friends to enjoy the journey of Valere and Zale concurrently. The combat system underwent a transformation, featuring balance adjustments based on player feedback, and now offers three difficulty levels for customization. A speedrunner’s Relic was added to facilitate swift gameplay, while the Parrot Relic was optimized to aid in hunting down collectibles more efficiently.

The latest update for “Sea of Stars,” titled “Throes of the Watchmaker,” released on May 20th, is not merely an upgrade but a substantial gameplay expansion. This update offers over eight hours of fresh content, which includes new locations, dungeons, mini-games, and puzzles to delve into. Additionally, it features new music compositions by Eric W. Brown, complemented by the work of guest composer Yasunori Mitsuda. The downloadable content (DLC) also introduces additional NPCs, enemies, and bosses to encounter during gameplay.

Sea of Stars’ Throes of the Watchmaker Expansion Launches

Characters Valere and Zale will gain new roles they can play: Zale takes on the Juggler, while Valere becomes an Acrobat. These roles bring fresh moves, damage styles, and combinations to experiment with. Along their journey, they’ll meet a new friend and character, Arty – a friendly robot who acts as an Artificer, capable of firing lasers. Furthermore, new action figures will be added for play in the entertaining Wheels minigame from Sea of Stars. Lastly, the three-player co-op mode introduced in The Dawn of Equinox will also be accessible.

In “Throes of the Watchmaker” and “Sea of Stars”, Valere and Zale will journey to the carnival-styled clockwork realm called Horloge following the main game’s conclusion. This location sets it apart from the original story and settings. At this point, it remains unclear whether Sabotage has extra content in store for “Sea of Stars”, or if “Throes of the Watchmaker” serves as the final significant part of the series. However, fans eager for more from the developer can check out “The Messenger”, a 2018 side-scrolling platformer that takes place in the same world, though far into the future.
