Unlock the Power of Coalescence in Monster Hunter Wilds: Maximize Your DPS!

In the game ‘Monster Hunter World’, the descriptions of skills can sometimes be unclear, failing to provide a comprehensive understanding of how they function in actual gameplay. These skill descriptions usually lack concrete numerical values, which makes it challenging for players to utilize them effectively when aiming to maximize damage output.

The Coalescence ability serves as an illustration of its kind. According to its explanation, it enhances both elemental attack strength and the likelihood of causing status effects, though the exact degree of improvement isn’t specified. Here’s a breakdown of how it functions.

How Does Coalescence Work in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Coalescence skill has the following description:

Boosts your ability to deal with elements and inflict status effects momentarily once you’ve recovered from harmful conditions such as blights or abnormal statuses.

In MH Wilds, there are three levels to Coalescence, each increasing the element damage dealt.

  • Level 1: When active, grants a 5-10% increase to elemental damage and status buildup.
  • Level 2: When active, grants a 10-15% increase to elemental damage and status buildup.
  • Level 3: When active, grants a 15-30% increase to elemental damage and status buildup.

In simpler terms, the ability called Coalescence activates when the Hunter naturally heals from the blight or status, but it doesn’t activate if you use an item like a Nulberry for healing. However, skills that lessen the impact and duration of blight and status effects do not interfere with Coalescence.

Upon activation, Coalescence boosts the damage of elemental attacks by a flat percentage that differs from one weapon to another. Specifically, it increases the elemental damage and status buildup on certain weapons by 5%, 10%, or 15%. Meanwhile, on other weapons, it can enhance the elemental damage up to 10%, 20%, or even 30% percent. The total Damage Per Second (DPS) across all weapons stays consistent due to variations in attack speed and motion values.

Coalescence’s effect cannot take a weapon’s elemental damage above the elemental damage cap (900).

What Does Elemental Attack and Status Buildup Mean

In MH Wilds, there are two aspects to Coalescence that might be confusing:

  • Elemental Attacks and Status Buildup: Elemental Attacks are fire, ice, thunder, water, and dragon. Status effects are Sleep, Paralysis, and Poison. The
  • Blights and Abnormal Status: Whenever a monster attacks you with an elemental attack, you are afflicted by the corresponding blight effect (fireblight, frostblight, etc.). Abnormal statuses are things like Stun, Poison, Paralysis, Bleeding, Blastblight, Resistance Down, Frenzy, Stench, etc. Basically, anything that is a negative debuff counts as an abnormal status.

Self-application of abnormal status effects through items isn’t possible in the game. For instance, Toadstool won’t have its intended effect if you try to use it without the Mushroomancer Skill. With this skill, the Toadstool transforms into a Potion instead, and Coalescence is not activated as a result.

Instead of boosting Attack like its predecessors, Coalescence now enhances Elemental damage and status effects only.

Is Coalescence Worth Using in Monster Hunter Wilds

Absolutely, Coalescence is indeed a potent ability within the game, particularly when combined with synergistic skills and weapons that enhance its potential. The optimal use of Coalescence is against enemies that inflict elemental damage for Blight effects or status conditions that don’t interrupt hunting. Status conditions such as Stun, Sleep, and Paralysis can bring a hunt to a grinding halt and should be carefully avoided whenever possible.

In terms of choosing the optimal status for procuring Coalescence, it’s Frenzy that stands out. This is due to the fact that Frenzy can self-inflict on the Hunter during battles against large monsters as a result of the bonus from the Gore Magala set (Gore Magala’s Tyranny: Black Eclipse). With Black Eclipse, players are relieved from the need to intentionally get hit by a monster to activate Coalescence. Instead, it triggers at the beginning of every fight automatically. Frenzy can subsequently be eliminated by attacking the monster a specified number of times.

This construction project requires the Antivirus ability, enhancing Frenzy management and granting Affinity upon cure. If you’re not employing this build, a Blight Resistance Level 2 is beneficial as it boosts the Blight status healing rate by 75%.

In your setup, avoid combining Blight Resistance Level 3 with Coalescence, since swiftly overcoming any Blight condition won’t activate the Coalescence ability.

Weapons that excel with Coalescence tend to gain the greatest advantage from elemental damage. Consequently, rapid-fire weapons such as Dual Blades, Insect Glaives, and Charge Blades are typically the optimal choices in this scenario.

Combining Coalescence with Burst makes for an effective damage-dealing combo in the game, although it necessitates strategic decisions regarding armor, talismans, and decorations. This setup can be incredibly potent, particularly when used by proficient players. However, this heavy emphasis on offense means there’s little room for defensive skills, which could prove detrimental in specific situations. Essentially, it’s a high-stakes approach that offers substantial rewards.
