In Stardew Valley, various types of mushrooms become discoverable for players across changing seasons. Some of these fungi are useful in creating beneficial dishes, while others may cause a drop in player’s energy upon consumption.
Players of Stardew Valley might discover the need for Red Mushrooms, essential for some bundles and useful crafting recipes. These mushrooms are scattered across different locations within the game, so it’s beneficial for players to familiarize themselves with their hiding spots ahead of time.
Where to Find Red Mushrooms
Red Mushrooms in Stardew Valley 1.6
Red Mushrooms grow in two different locations: the Forest Farm during autumn, or the Secret Woods throughout both summer and fall. To access the Secret Woods, you’ll need to have upgraded your axe to a Steel Axe, which is located in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest. If you didn’t select the Forest Farm, then that’s where you can find these mushrooms.
If you delve into the mines, it’s possible you could come across a “Mushroom Level” (from level 81 onwards). This term suggests that this is a unique level with a 3.5% probability of appearing when entering the mines. On this level, you will encounter Red Mushrooms and the less common Purple Mushrooms.
If you’re seeking a more dependable approach for gathering edible mushrooms, consider exploring these alternative techniques instead.
Mushroom Cave (Farm)

If you manage to earn a total of 25,000 grams, Demetrius will pay you a visit the next morning. He’s interested in using the vacant cave on your property for research purposes. He offers you a choice between having fruit bats or mushrooms in your Farm Cave. Choose the mushrooms, and your Farm Cave will be ready for them.
After deciding about the cave, you won’t have an opportunity to alter that choice for that specific file. In other words, if you select the fruit bats, you can’t swap them out and obtain the Mushroom Cave on your farm.
In the Mushroom Cave, there are six storage containers, along with a 1.6 Dehydrator. On alternating days, mushrooms are gathered automatically into these boxes. From your farm’s Mushroom Cave, you can harvest several types of mushrooms.
- Red Mushroom (Common)
- Purple Mushroom (Rare)
- Chanterelle (Uncommon)
- Morel (Uncommon)
- Common Mushroom (Very Common)
In the cave, there’s about a 1 in 8 chance that a Red Mushroom will appear. However, you’ll mostly find Common Mushrooms. Every so often, you might get a Red Mushroom or something even rarer. If luck is truly on your side, that Red Mushroom could be of high quality.
In the Secret Woods, you might come across Red Mushrooms during both summer and autumn. However, these mushrooms are more likely to grow amidst the Fiddlehead Ferns during the summer rather than in the fall.
Mushroom Cave (Ginger Island)

In the 1.5 upgrade, a fresh locale named “Ginger Island” has been incorporated into “Stardew Valley”. You can access this area once you’ve completed either the Community Center or the JojaMart renovation projects. Ginger Island is divided into various zones, however, to explore them, you need to gather Golden Walnuts and offer them to the island parrots.
On the northern part of Ginger Island, you’ll find both the Volcano and the Dig Site. The Dig Site is situated west of Professor Snail’s tent or office. To reach it, you will require 10 Golden Walnuts.
After fixing the bridge leading to the Dig Site, you’ll spot a substantial rock obstructing the entrance of a cave. To remove it and gain access to Professor Snail as well as open the Ginger Island Mushroom Cave, employ a bomb or explosive ammunition. Keep in mind that mushrooms will grow within this cave daily, so remember to visit it occasionally.
Chop Down Mushroom Trees

During autumn, there’s an unusual occurrence where a common tree (not a fruit-bearing one) could transform into a Mushroom Tree overnight. If you chop these trees down, they’ll drop Red Mushrooms. However, if you attach a collector or tapper to them, you can harvest Common, Red, or Purple Mushrooms throughout the year, except during winter.
5 update introduced the Mushroom Tree Seeds in Stardew Valley. You can grow these seeds on your farm to create Mushroom Trees. To obtain a Mushroom Tree Seed, you first need to unlock Qi’s Walnut Room on Ginger Island. Each Mushroom Tree Seed costs 5 Qi Gems.
How to Craft Mushroom Log
How to Grow Mushrooms

6 introduces a new crafting item named the “Mushroom Log”. You can learn to craft this item once you reach the Foraging Level 4. Every four days in the game, the Mushroom Log generates one Mushroom. If it rains or if you use a Rain Totem, the waiting period reduces by one day.
For a higher quality of mushrooms, position them around trees (excluding fruit trees), preferably within a 7×7 grid centered on the log. Take note of the example shown in the provided image for clarity.

What Are Red Mushrooms Used For?
Should You Eat Red Mushrooms?
During your cave explorations, it’s best to avoid munching on a Red Mushroom as it decreases your energy levels. The higher the quality of the Red Mushroom, the greater the decrease in your energy.
Unpopular choice, red mushrooms are not appreciated as gifts. Avoid gifting them unless explicitly asked for a job-related purpose.
You should use Red Mushrooms for the following instead:
- If you haven’t completed the Bulletin Board in the Community Center, then you’ll want to save x1 Red Mushroom for the Dye Bundle. You can also use a Red Mushroom in the Exotic Foraging Bundle (Crafts Room).
- You can tailor a Red Mushroom using the sewing machine (Emily’s house, or your own) to get a Spotted Headscarf.
- Sometimes, a Red Mushroom will be requested in the “Help Wanted” quests outside Pierre’s Store.
- Red Mushrooms are used in the Life Elixir crafting recipe (unlocks at Combat Level 2). Life Elixirs fully restore your health, but to make one, you’ll need:
- x1 Red Mushroom
- x1 Purple Mushroom
- x1 Morel
- x1 Chanterelle
A Life Elixir added to your Grange Display during the Stardew Valley Fair is worth 6 points.
