After playing Slay The Spire, deck-building fans eventually discover another engaging indie title that evokes similar feelings, and it’s not Slay The Spire 2. Instead, it’s Deck of Haunts, a highly addictive roguelike game that refines the basics of the deck-building genre with inventive elements. In Deck of Haunts, possessing the best cards won’t guarantee victory. Additionally, players need to strategize by paying close attention to the room layout in this game, as it plays a crucial role in gameplay.
In one or two tries, you’ll likely grasp the art of creating rooms in the haunted house, but imagine if you had those helpful hints sooner! The design options you’d have would vary based on the points earned each night. With these tips, you could construct a labyrinthine house that guides every visitor to a distinct corner, thereby reducing their chances of stumbling upon secrets they shouldn’t.
How To Design the Best Room/Building Layout In Deck Of Haunts
During the building phase, players should focus on achieving two primary objectives:
1. Extending the journey towards The Heart (or making it harder to reach)
2. Identifying and isolating visitors for simpler elimination
Each visitor who locates The Heart decreases its health by one point. However, if a visitor is a Ritualist, they will continue to harm The Heart on each subsequent turn after finding it. Consequently, it’s crucial to make it difficult for visitors to quickly reach The Heart.
A helpful tip: Establish a single route to The Heart for better chances of discovery. Having multiple paths or rooms can increase the likelihood of finding it, but having just one narrows the chances. Only those individuals who navigate along the exact path will eventually discover it.
One way to put it is: To make the journey to The Heart longer, we can insert various chambers along the way from the entrance. Since most enemies in the game can only move one room per turn, this will add more turns for you to eliminate them before they reach The Heart. This extra time gives you a better chance to slay them before they expose the secret room.
Expanding The Heart’s layout with additional rooms is beneficial, but it’s equally important to consider branching paths. During the building process, introducing cul-de-sacs can be advantageous. Connecting these paths to each other should generally be avoided. By creating a cul-de-sac that branches off from the entrance, you encourage visitors to get lost. If a visitor reaches a cul-de-sac, they will eventually have no choice but to retrace their steps back to the starting point, which is the entrance room. It’s also possible that they might take the wrong path altogether and end up in another dead-end.

One advantage of having a cul-de-sac trail is that it effectively increases the number of directions you can guide visitors away from their destination. It’s also beneficial to design cul-de-sacs off the main path, ensuring that even if a visitor heads towards The Heart, they may still encounter a dead-end and be diverted before reaching the hidden room.
In this design, we refer to it as a “Spider Layout”. Each terminating path can be imagined as a spider leg, stemming from the spider’s body, which corresponds to the entrance room here. This layout is particularly useful for distinguishing between visitors, especially if there happens to be a Priest in the group. You might be aware that Priests suffer damage or drain only when they are by themselves. Therefore, having a design that can separate individuals becomes crucial.
