Fans might have to wait a bit longer for updates regarding the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, but it’s highly likely that it will be released eventually. The Wizarding World RPG from 2023 shattered global sales records and was widely acclaimed as the best Harry Potter game yet, even without the main character. Given its success, it seems unlikely that Warner Bros. would choose to miss out on potential profits by not putting out Hogwarts Legacy 2.
Despite its strong points, it’s clear that Hogwarts Legacy has potential for further refinement. While catering to casual gamers is acceptable, this approach unfortunately leads to a simplistic, uninteresting gameplay experience. The combat system, in particular, seems to have been overly streamlined, often reducing to a variation of the Batman: Arkham combat system with basic rock-paper-scissors vulnerability mechanics added. There’s not much strategic depth beyond matching the right spell type with an enemy’s shield and executing the straightforward parry timing. Abilities like Avadakadavra, which can be overpowered, exacerbate these issues. In the development of the next game’s combat system, Avalanche has opportunities to expand upon these elements, creating a richer, more rewarding gaming experience overall.
Spell-Based Upgrades Could Be an Easy Fix for Hogwarts Legacy’s Combat
Hogwarts Legacy’s Combat Deserves More Depth
Despite its flaws, the battle system in Hogwarts Legacy is at least enjoyable to play. Simply put, it’s fun to cast spells against an adversary, switching between numerous unique spell types for unexpected and peculiar results. It’s worth noting that Avalanche Software has done a commendable job of recreating the fast-paced and elegant combat from the Harry Potter movies in an interactive format. Among all Harry Potter games, Hogwarts Legacy boasts the most impressive spell-casting system.
Beneath the attractive appearance and enjoyable handling, battles in Hogwarts Legacy fall short of being exciting. Although players have the option to try out different spell combinations, there’s little incentive to do so because there aren’t many rewards for such experimentation, and the combat encounters never become challenging enough to necessitate more innovative strategies. To address this issue, introducing a spellcrafting system could be beneficial as it would add depth to each spell, enabling players to enhance or modify them in significant ways. Consequently, Hogwarts Legacy 2’s combat could maintain its user-friendly nature while providing a route for progression and self-expression for those who wish to explore it.
Spell Upgrades Could Give Hogwarts Legacy 2 Some Much-Needed Build Variety
character building.
In Hogwarts Legacy, designing a wizard who excels in offense but lacks defensive skills might prove quite challenging due to the game’s stat allocation system. Conversely, games like Elden Ring provide players with the freedom to invest all their upgrade points into a single attribute if they prefer, leading to diverse, daring, and original playstyles. This flexibility is made possible by its customizable progression system. In the hypothetical Hogwarts Legacy 2, instead of traditional stats like strength and dexterity, the game might employ spell-based attributes. Players could then opt for a control-oriented build, utilizing uncommon methods to defeat enemies, or specialize in enhancing damage spells with elemental advantages, transforming into an offensive powerhouse at the cost of support skills.
