Unlock the Secrets of Pokemon Tools in Pokemon Pocket!

In January 2025, the Pokemon Pocket update introduced Tool Cards during the Space-Time Smackdown event. This is the third kind of Trainer Card to be added to the game, with Stadium Cards being the only category yet to be incorporated. Although the functionality and principles behind Pokemon Tools in the Pocket version are similar to those in the traditional Trading Card Game (TCG), there are notable differences worth examining.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn about various Pokémon accessories, get familiarized with the latest ones released in the ongoing A2 extension, discover cards that work well with these tools, and understand strategies to combat Pokémon Tools effectively.

There’s an exclusive assignment related to Pokemon Tools, which will acquaint you with the Trainer Cards and bestow upon you Pack Hourglasses as a prize.

Pokemon Tool Cards Explained

In the game Pokemon Pocket, there are special cards called Trainer Cards, known as Pokemon Tools. These cards can enhance other cards they’re connected to in various ways, such as raising HP or amplifying damage output. Some even work gradually to whittle down the opponent’s HP. Regardless of their specific function, they all serve the primary role of enhancing a Pokemon’s stats or abilities.

A Pokemon’s item is displayed in a compact container on one part of its card, visible to both players. By tapping the icon for the item card, you can inspect the attached items on any Pokemon, whether it belongs to you or your opponent.

How to Use Pokemon Tools

As Training Cards, Pokemon Tools function in a manner similar to the Item Cards in the Pokemon Pocket game. At the beginning of every turn, you have the option to affix as many Tools as desired onto various Pokemon. However, each Pokemon can only possess one Tool at a given moment, meaning that if another Tool is to be attached, the current one must first be discarded.

Here are the rules for playing Pokemon Tools in TCG Pocket:

  • One Tool per Pokemon: Each Pokemon can have only one Tool. A new Tool cannot be attached unless the existing one is discarded.
  • No limit on Tool attachments per turn: Like Item Cards, there are no restrictions on the number of Tools you can play per turn. As long as there are Pokemon without Tools on the board, you can equip them. Since a maximum of four Pokemon can be in play, you can attach up to four Tools per turn.
  • Tools can be replaced if discarded: If an opponent discards your Tool or it self-discards after meeting a condition, you can attach a new Tool in its place.

List of All Pokemon Tools in Pocket

In the recently released Space-Time Smackdown extension for Pokémon Pocket, a fresh assortment of Tool Cards was unveiled, including three distinct Tools: Lum Berry, Rocky Helmet, and Giant Cape. Let me explain their functions individually.

1. Lum Berry – This handy item restores the user’s special defense when consumed.
2. Rocky Helmet – Wearing this protective gear boosts the user’s defense during physical attacks but lowers its speed.
3. Giant Cape – When equipped, this cloak increases the user’s special attack power but decreases its speed as well.

Lum Berry

After every move, if the Pokemon linked to this card has any special status effects, they will be healed from all of them and this card gets discarded.

In simpler terms, Lum Berry is an item in Pokémon games. It removes debuffs like Sleep, Poison, Burn, Paralysis, and Confusion from a Pokémon instantly when attached to them. But, once it’s used (i.e., the Pokémon is cured), the Lum Berry gets discarded and can no longer be used again.

Rocky Helmet

If your opponent’s Pokémon attacks the Pokémon this card is connected to, which is currently in the Active Spot, inflict 20 damage upon the attacking Pokémon.

As a passionate Pokémon trainer, I’ve found the Rocky Helmet to be quite the formidable accessory for my Pokémon! When an adversary strikes one of my Pokémon sporting this Tool, they instantly suffer 20 points of damage. But here’s the catch: the Rocky Helmet only activates when it’s attached to an Active Pokémon. If an opponent decides to target a Pokémon on my Bench wearing this Helmet, they won’t receive any counter-damage in response.

Among many, Rocky Helmet is widely regarded as the top Choice Band in Pokemon Pocket. This accessory can be added to Druddigon, enhancing its already formidable tank capabilities, or combined with other sturdy Pokemon to fashion your own powerful variant of Druddigon.

Giant Cape

“The Pokemon this card is attached to gets +20 HP.”

The Giant Cape operates in a manner akin to the Potion Card; however, instead of recovering health post-damage, this item enhances a Pokémon’s maximum Health Points (HP) from the get-go. For instance, if a Pokémon initially has 140 HP, using the Giant Cape would raise its HP to 160.

Cards with Pokemon Tool Synergies

In addition to the introduction of Pokemon Tool Cards in the Space-Time Smackdown expansion, certain Pokemon were introduced that work particularly well with these tools. At present, these include Pachirisu ex, Skarmory, Starly, and Rotom. The table below illustrates how each of them connects with Pokemon Tools:

* Pachirisu ex: When it uses its Tool Card, it can switch places with a benched tool card, allowing it to take advantage of the benefits that tool offers.
* Skarmory: Its Ability “Stalwart” prevents special effects from tool cards on Pokemon-ex and basic Pokemon.
* Starly: With its Ability “Peck”, it can flip a coin. If heads, you draw an extra card. If tails, your opponent discards a card of their choice. Its Tool Card allows it to use this ability more frequently.
* Rotom: It switches places with the active tool card when it is put onto the field, allowing it to benefit from the tool’s effects immediately.

Card Effect
Pachirisu ex Deals +40 DMG if it has a Tool
Skarmory Deals +30 DMG if it has a Tool
Starly Discards the enemy’s Tool before attacking
Rotom Deals +30 DMG if the enemy has a Tool

How to Counter Pokemon Tools

Luckily, Pokemon Pocket introduced two new additions to the Pokemon Tools arsenal in the same expansion – Starly and Rotom. In order to neutralize your opponent’s Tool, you can utilize Starly’s Pluck move, which allows you to remove the Tool before launching an attack, or Rotom’s Assault Laser, which inflicts an extra 30 damage if your opponent has a Tool affixed.
