The game, though challenging with puzzles reminiscent of an escape room, offers a straightforward experience. It’s the minimalistic visual aesthetic and text-based gameplay that make it stand apart. Instead of passively scrolling through static slides, the developers at Patrones & Escondites have breathed life into the text within ‘My Abode‘, making it more engaging than one might initially expect.
In the lead-up to the 2020 release of the studio’s first game titled “Unmemory”, we have “Your House“. This narrative focuses on Debbie, a teen grappling with mysteries, as she uncovers secrets hidden within a strange mansion. Finding an address and a key on her bed without any explanations leaves her puzzled. As she delves deeper, the complexity of the situation grows, turning one mystery into several. Without revealing spoilers about the game’s plot, “Your House” effectively keeps players intrigued, despite its brevity.
Initially, the captivating noir comic book aesthetic of the game ‘Your House‘ is its standout feature. However, it’s the gameplay where it truly excels. It’s impressive how the studio manages to create an almost entirely text-based game that feels more engaging than a PowerPoint presentation while preserving its distinctive voice and retro charm. Their innovative use of ‘text as gameplay’ has left me eager for more games in this unique style. Upon finishing all five chapters, uncovering secret rooms and passageways, and solving the mystery, my main gripe about ‘Your House‘ was simply that it ended too soon.
Your House Utilizes Text in a Whole New Way
By setting aside the actual mystery that players must unravel for themselves, let’s focus instead on the unique methods they will use to investigate. This game, in essence, is similar to a visual novel, with lots of reading involved that helps bring the comic book-style world and main character to life. The developers, based in Barcelona, are responsible for any minor translation or localization issues found in the game’s text. Despite these small flaws, the passion put into every frame of this game is evident, particularly when players engage with the on-screen words.
In your game, Your House, standard gameplay mechanics aren’t present; instead, Debbie doesn’t respond directly to player commands like most visual novels. Instead, clicking on highlighted words within each text segment triggers actions. For example, choosing a room from the description will transport you there, or selecting specific item names may reveal new clues. At times, clicking on seemingly random elements in a block of text can lead to positive outcomes. This encourages players to read attentively rather than skimming through the text, and it promotes active engagement over passive consumption. I believe this innovative approach could be effectively used more often in other visual novels, which are sometimes criticized for being similar to reading books. The words are often presented in unconventional ways, and every design decision is carefully thought out.
In an unexpected twist, voice acting was incorporated during significant plot points in the game, accompanied by excellent sound design while navigating the titled residence. The squeaky floorboards, distant footsteps, racing heartbeat, and enigmatic chimes that echoed after solving a puzzle were delightfully immersive, perfectly synchronized with each line of on-screen text. The entire atmosphere created by the developers harmoniously blended, making my experience in Your House feel like I’d entered a real-life Nancy Drew adventure.
Your House Requires Players to Use Their Wits
During Debbie’s stay at the mansion, she stumbles upon a variety of puzzles that span from simple to complex. The game doesn’t spoon-feed you solutions, which can make things challenging. At times, you might need to utilize your night vision goggles, and other instances call for selecting a particular sequence of tiles on a bathroom wall. Deciding when to apply certain hints or which items require interaction can be tricky, but that’s all part of the excitement. I struggle with escape rooms, often found counting ceiling tiles just in case they become useful (they never do). Those proficient at solving puzzles might find it easier to visualize how each clue fits together, but for me, it was a process of trial and error.
Although the game’s narrative had unexpected plot developments and the graphics at the end of each chapter were breathtakingly beautiful, I couldn’t help but feel that there was room for more. The developers at Patrones & Escondites managed to tell their story in just five chapters, but I found myself yearning for a deeper immersion into the game’s universe. Given its affordable price, it’s definitely worth recommending to puzzle enthusiasts or those who value the art of storytelling and innovative gaming experiences.
The duration of your gameplay in “Your House” may vary based on your problem-solving skills and experience with escape rooms. Personally, it took me roughly 3 hours to finish the game, but I’d guess that most players might take anywhere between 2 to 4 hours.
