In contrast to earlier “Legend of Zelda” games, Link no longer recovers his health by collecting hearts in “Breath of the Wild”. Instead, this game introduces cooking mechanics. As you progress through your adventure, you’ll gather materials from slain monsters, wildlife, and various other sources. Eating food will help restore Link’s health, but preparing it offers better health benefits and, depending on the ingredients used, can bestow temporary buffs such as increased durability or attack power.
In the game ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’, more than 100 recipes are available, yet there’s no comprehensive cookbook to help you remember all of them. You can view the ingredients for a meal by choosing it and then clicking on “Recipe”, but it can be tricky to recall what each dish contains due to the large number of options.
How to Cook in BotW
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, cooking is quite straightforward. To get started, you’ll need to light a campfire and place a cooking pot next to it. To access your inventory, press the X-button. Navigate to ‘Materials’ using the right control stick. Once there, choose an edible item like an apple by pressing the A-button. After that, select ‘Hold’ to start the cooking process.
Link’s container can accommodate approximately five different items or ingredients at a time. Typical recipes usually require 1-3 items, but more substantial dishes might need up to 4-5 items. Anything listed under the ‘Materials’ tab in Link’s inventory is cookable, but not everything that can be cooked should be prepared. Combining incompatible materials (like gems) may result in less desirable outcomes. Some ingredients will provide a specific “effect” to the dish. Be cautious when combining two items with effects as they might nullify each other. For instance, if you want to prepare something that restores Stamina (such as the Stamella Shroom), avoid adding any food item that provides an effect other than Stamina (like the Warm Safflina).
Soup & Stew Recipes

In the world of Breath of the Wild, soups and stews often incorporate vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, and occasionally flowers as their primary components. Fresh milk is also a common addition. While most vegetables and herbs can provide Link with a boost when prepared, flowers are more commonly used to enhance armor rather than for culinary purposes.
- Vegetables/Herbs: Fortified Pumpkin, Endura Carrot, Swift Carrot, Hearty Radish, Big Hearty Radish, Spicy Pepper, Hyrule Herb
- Mushrooms: Hearty Shroom, Big Hearty Shroom, Chillshroom, Razorshroom, Ironshroom, Zapshroom, Rushroom, Sunshroom, Stamella Shroom, Hylian Shroom, Endurashroom, Silent Shroom
- Flowers: Warm Safflina, Silent Princess, Cool Safflina, Swift Violet, Mighty Thistle, Blue Nightshade, Electric Safflina, Armoranth

Rice & Egg Recipes

In simple terms, dishes labeled as ‘rice’ or ‘egg’ meals primarily consist of rice or egg. For recipes that require a single egg, boosting the healing effect can be achieved by using five eggs instead. If your goal is to prepare bread or rice balls, it’s essential to have an extra ingredient when cooking with Hylian Rice. Preparing Hylian Rice alone results in Dubious Food, which only restores a quarter heart.

Dessert Recipes

Typical dessert recipes often call for Tabantha Wheat and Cane Sugar, though some incorporate fruits too. Since these items are commonly found, particularly in Breath of the Wild, sourcing them is relatively easy. The recipes might involve a single ingredient or a combination of the following components:

Miscellaneous Recipes (Monster, Fruit, Herbs, etc)

Preparing skewers or fried greens with similar ingredients is common, and the deliciousness they offer can either win over many or a few hearts based on the quantity used during preparation. These recipes are relatively simple compared to their complex counterparts and are handy when you’re missing specific items like fresh milk or cane sugar.
However, unlike previous recipes, these Monster Recipes require something special: Monster Extract, an exclusive ingredient that Kilton sells. The price for this unique ingredient is 9 mon, which you can acquire by trading in Monster Parts with Kilton.

Cooking Tips for Beginning & Late Game
Recommended Ingredients
Initially, you’ll begin your adventure in BotW on the Great Plateau. One of the initial items you’re likely to find is an Apple. You can either let this fall onto a fire for a Baked Apple or toss it into a cooking pot to prepare Simmered Fruit.
There’s a pot outside the Old Man’s cabin (second picture in above images).
After obtaining some weapons or the Sheikah Slate’s bomb feature, you can begin catching wild boars and fish. Specifically, you’ll require meat, fish, and a spicy pepper to prepare the Spicy Meat and Seafood Stir-Fry. This meal can be offered to the Old Man in return for the Warm Doublet, which will prove useful as you conquer the Trial Shrines on the Great Plateau.
Because Link might not have many hearts at the beginning of your game, it’s best to consume simple meals that restore only a few hearts. This way, you won’t need to bother with intricate recipes. Even a meal that restores 5 Health Points should suffice if you’re still on the Great Plateau. Preparing a single Raw Meat to create a Meat Skewer or a Hylian Bass to make Fish Skewers will do until you acquire the Paraglider.
As you progress from midgame to late game, it’s time to prepare more robust dishes. Think about blending ingredients that boost your attack strength, defense, speed, and so on. By now, in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you should have significantly stronger weapons and armor, which means less health depletion compared to the Great Plateau days. However, this also signifies encountering tougher adversaries, so it’s crucial to have meals capable of fully replenishing your health. For optimal results, use ingredients labeled as “Hearty,” such as the Big Hearty Radish or Hearty Snail.
Additionally, you’ll be required to prepare particular dishes for certain side missions, like preparing Seafood Paella for the “What’s for Dinner” mission in Lurelin Village.
Or,
For some side missions, you’ll need to whip up specific recipes such as making a Seafood Paella for the “What’s for Dinner” task in Lurelin Village.
Trial of the Sword Recipes
If you own the expansion pack for “Breath of the Wild,” you can challenge the Trial of the Sword in the Korok Woods by examining the pedestal of the Master Sword. This action will transport you to a different location, stripping you of all your equipment, even your food supplies. The Trial of the Sword consists of three levels, each featuring enemies with progressively increased difficulty.
It’s strongly suggested that you prepare a dish that boosts your offense (or defense) for about half an hour using a Dragon Claw prior to attempting the Trial of the Sword, as this could significantly enhance your performance.
In my gaming adventure, every now and then, I stumble upon Rest Areas sprinkled across the floors. These cozy nooks come equipped with a cooking pot and treasure chests filled with armor for the upcoming challenges. As I delve deeper into the final trials (the grueling 23-floor stretch), I’ve discovered Hearty Truffles hidden within the later Rest Areas. When it comes to whipping up meals in the Trial of the Sword, I’ve learned the hard way that it’s best not to dump all my ingredients into a single recipe, especially those precious Hearty Truffles. Instead, I cook them one at a time. This approach ensures I’ll have nutritious meals that not only refill my health bar but also grant me extra hearts for an edge in the game.
If you require additional nutritious meals while undergoing the Trial of the Sword, consider chopping trees and preparing the wood into food. This will yield Dubious Food, restoring about one-fourth of a heart’s worth of energy. Gather enough wood for cooking, and you should be able to produce sufficient Dubious Food to replenish several hearts.
