In “Red Dead Redemption 2”, Arthur Morgan comes across an array of peculiar individuals, and it appears as though each region is teeming with more enigmatic characters than the last. While Arthur’s actions can significantly influence these mysterious people within the game, some of them should be allowed to live out their lives naturally so that John Marston has the chance to encounter them again in 1907.
In the epilogue of Red Dead Redemption 2, once players assume control of John Marston in 1907, there are several side quests involving strangers that players might find appealing if they chose to leave these missions for John, rather than completing them during Arthur Morgan’s storyline.
7. The Widow of Willard’s Rest – Part 4
Visit Charlotte Balfour to See How Arthur Morgan Saved Her Life
- Location: Willard’s Rest, South of Roanoke Ridge
In Chapter 6, if players guide Arthur Morgan to Willard’s Rest in Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover, they will encounter a distraught widow out in the woods on her own, mourning her deceased husband. This woman had ventured into the wilderness with her spouse seeking a tranquil existence, but without him, she is unable to hunt and provide for herself. Fortunately, Arthur Morgan can show her how to hunt and shoot animals.
In 1907, if John Marston were to revisit Willard’s Rest, he would discover that Charlotte Balfour is still living there, having honed her skills as an exceptional hunter. Her days are tranquil and uncomplicated, filled with peace and the beauty of simplicity. She speaks fondly of Arthur Morgan, the man who once rescued her life.
6. The Veteran – Part 4
Take a Trip to O’Creagh’s Run to Share Stories About Arthur and Keep a Fine Horse
- Location: O’Creagh’s Run, East of Grizzlies East
Arthur Morgan may encounter Hamish Sinclair, a war-hardened man near O’Creagh’s Run in the Grizzlies East of Ambarino. His horse took his prosthetic leg along with it, causing him some trouble. Helping this veteran reveals Arthur’s compassionate side and he even extends an invitation for Arthur to visit for a chat and some fishing. This quest is lengthy and heartwarming, but players should wait until Part 4 before they meet Hamish again.
In my opinion, experiencing Part 4 of the quest with John Marston is undeniably the preferred route for many gamers, as it leads John to Hamish, a reunion facilitated by Arthur Morgan’s journal entries. Reminiscing about Arthur, the bond between these characters deepens, and at journey’s end, John gets to keep Buell, Hamish’s sturdy and enchanting steed.
5. Arcadia for Amateurs – Part 5
Ensure That Arthur Morgan’s Picture is Immortalized, and Meet His Old Friend
- Location: Horseshoe Overlook, South of Valentine
If Arthur Morgan plans to link up with Albert Mason by the Southeastern river in Strawberry, he’ll stumble upon an exciting new hobby – wildlife photography. Working alongside Albert Mason is no small feat, as this fellow often finds himself in all sorts of predicaments with animals and nature, solely for the purpose of capturing unforgettable photos.
If Arthur assists Albert during their series of adventures, he may choose to part ways following their fourth encounter. Later on, John Marston will discover Albert at Horseshoe Overlook. This reunion between Arthur and Albert is unique to a cutscene, while John expresses his feelings about the old Van der Linde gang’s camp. Furthermore, this event guarantees that Arthur’s portrait will be displayed in Galerie Laurent, allowing players to view him at Saint Denis anytime.
4. The Artist’s Way – Part 3
Discover Arthur Morgan’s Portrait at the Galerie Laurent in Saint Denis
- Location: Building to the East of the Barber in Saint Denis
It’s enjoyable to observe John encountering the artist and another individual in an art gallery, where they not only exchange thoughts on Arthur Morgan but also find themselves embroiled in misadventures with Charles Châtenay, a Frenchman who appears to have a penchant for getting involved with women.
In the third phase of his journey, it’s the part that seems most significant to John. This is because he finds himself in Saint Denis, specifically at Galerie Laurent – an art gallery located within the city. If players have finished the “Arcadia for Amateur” quests, they will encounter a portrait of Arthur Morgan there. This allows John to witness his old friend’s immortalization, not just in memory, but also physically.
3. A Better World, A New Friend
Finish Arthur Morgan’s Hunting Requests for a Marston-esque Squirrel
- Location: Taxidermist House, Strawberry, after completing 5 Hunting Requests
Ms. L. Hobbs invites hunters to collaborate in her Wildlife Art Exhibition. Those who deliver suitable small animal carcasses to her will receive some money as a thank you. Arthur Morgan could handle some of these tasks, but his health issues prevent him from completing them all. Therefore, it would be beneficial for John Marston to carry on with the hunting assignments to support Ms. L. Hobbs further.
Completing all hunting tasks allows players to visit Ms. L. Hobbs’ quaint home in Valentine, known as the Taxidermist House. There, John Marston receives a squirrel statue from her, which can be displayed above the fireplace at Beecher’s Hope. This is a quick side-mission, but it offers a fun collectible hunt, as Abigail tends to discard it, forcing players to search for it again.
2. The American Inferno, Burnt Out
John Marston Meets Dutch Van der Linde’s Favorite Author
- Location: East of Upper Montana River in West Elizabeth
Instead of being more of a bookworm than a brawler, John Marston is primarily known for his fighting skills, but he has an unforgettable memory of the lessons imparted by his mentor, Dutch Van der Linde. Dutch was deeply fond of reading, and one of his favorite authors was Evelyn Miller, whom John could encounter if he journeyed West beyond Blackwater, towards Tanner’s Reach, nestled near the Upper Montana River.
In this unique adventure exclusive to John Marston, it’s intriguing to observe him conversing with a cherished disciple of his mentor. This five-part journey woven by an unidentified stranger leads John through an engaging storyline that is definitely worth living in the epilogue segment of Red Dead Redemption 2.
1. He’s British, Of Course
Track Down Exotic Animals and Battle a Lion
- Location: North of Pleasance, Lemoyne
Experiencing Arthur’s antics with a British character and an array of unusual animals in their circus is entertaining, but so is watching solo John Marston struggle to manage everything. This mission could be left for John to handle, and if that’s the choice, players are in store for a hilarious experience they might have missed out on if they had completed it with Arthur first.
John’s interactions with animals are often uncomfortable, and given his history of being scratched by a wolf, leaving him with a significant facial scar, it’s not likely that he would enjoy or benefit from encounters with lions, as the risk of additional injuries is high for him.
