In many games, there may be informal guidelines or customs, which players unconsciously adopt during gameplay. These “unwritten rules” become more common in long-lasting franchises. Over time, the longer a franchise persists, the more deeply rooted and widespread these unwritten rules become. Therefore, with its 34-year history, the Civilization series certainly has amassed a significant number of such traditions.
For quite some time, every installment in the Civilization series followed a similar fundamental structure. However, Civilization 7 has taken a different approach, significantly changing several key aspects. One of these mechanisms that have undergone significant transformation is the method of victory, and this change necessitates the creation of new strategies for each type. This is particularly relevant when it comes to the Military victory in Civilization 7, which differs greatly from its predecessors.
The Unwritten Rules of Getting a Military Victory in Civilization 7
Commanders Are The Key to Everything
One significant enhancement in Civilization 7 lies in the introduction of Commanders. These Commanders function like enhanced Great Generals, possessing the ability to gather and lead an amalgamated military force comprising various individual combat units. This combined unit, led by the Commander, operates as a single entity during movement, and once they penetrate enemy territory, the Commander can strategically deploy these stored forces.
In Civilization 7, these Commanders are indispensable for securing a Military victory. They gain experience when their troops engage battles nearby, which can be spent on impressive stat upgrades and unique abilities that can significantly shift battle outcomes. It’s crucial for players to always deploy Commanders, particularly as an Age concludes, as any units grouped into an army will persist through the Age transition.
It’s More Important Than Ever to Have a Diverse Army
As a gamer, I can’t stress enough the importance of having a diverse army composition in my battles. Siege units are game-changers when it comes to demolishing fortifications swiftly. Ranged units, on the other hand, bypass defenses altogether and weaken the enemies within. Lastly, infantry and cavalry are crucial for the final push. In order to win a Military victory in Civilization 7, it’s essential to have a harmonious blend of these unit types working together effectively.
Use a Surplus of Gold to Upgrade and Train Units
If the players are effectively managing their empires during the Antiquity Age, they’re likely to amass a considerable amount of gold by its end. To secure a Military victory, it would be wise to invest this wealth into upgrading existing field units to higher tiers and quickly training new units within the towns.
Use Influence to Gain Military Aid
In much the same vein, players can expect a consistent stream of Influence throughout the Exploration Era and beyond. For those aiming for a Military triumph, this ongoing supply of Influence could be leveraged to secure Military Assistance from other global leaders. This assistance temporarily boosts the player’s combat abilities. If a player amasses sufficient Influence, they should regularly request Military Assistance for maximum benefit.
Sometimes Peace Is The Best Option
In contrast to earlier Civilization games like Civilization 7, the primary pathway to victory in Military and Domination victories has shifted. Unlike before, where players had to annihilate all other civilizations to emerge victorious, success in Civilization 7 is achieved by capturing enemy settlements. Interestingly, it can be more effective to negotiate wisely rather than rely on force. This is because adversarial civilizations might propose peace agreements and offer some of their settlements as an inducement. Consequently, preserving other civilizations during gameplay has become a more strategic choice in Civilization 7.
