Independent game developer Dogubomb, in collaboration with Publisher Raw Fury, will be launching their inaugural title, the intriguing puzzle game titled “Blue Prince“, on April 10. Over an eight-year journey, this studio has dedicated its efforts to creating “Blue Prince”, and at first sight, one might mistake it as a typical linear puzzle adventure. However, upon closer inspection, there’s a lot more depth hidden within the gameplay of “Blue Prince“.
The game, named Blue Prince, incorporates exploration into its design by encouraging players to map out the pathways in the Mt. Holly estate. Throughout this grand house, a variety of puzzles and mysteries await, guiding the player towards Room 46 and unraveling the story. However, each morning the house reverts back to its original state, requiring players to redraw their strategies daily. This daily reset mechanism keeps each day in Blue Prince filled with surprises. In a conversation with Game Rant before the release of Blue Prince, Tonda Ros, director and creator at Dogumbomb, discussed how these elements challenge players within the game.
Blue Prince Progression Reset System Explained
According to Ros, one of the main issues with classic-style puzzle games is that they may lead players to repeatedly struggle with the same challenge, leaving them with two unappealing options: either seeking outside help for the puzzle solution or abandoning any further progress. As Ros explains, this is similar to a “binary choice” scenario.
As a game enthusiast diving into Blue Prince, remember this: You’ve got the freedom to venture forth whenever you wish, continuously uncovering new grounds. If you find yourself at a dead end, don’t fret! Simply start a fresh day and discover entirely new rooms. Rest assured, there’s nothing hindering or obstructing your progression in this adventure.
In the game called “Blue Prince“, you’ll be whisked away to Mt. Holly house where your mission is to locate Room 46. Whenever you come across a shut door, you get to decide which of three possible rooms you want to investigate. These rooms could contain puzzles or rewards, but they might also present challenges. For instance, a pantry may reward you with coins, whereas a closet offers two items. As you traverse the mansion, you’ll create a blueprint consisting of 45 slots arranged in a 5×9 table to help you avoid blind alleys and determine how close you are to Room 46.
In Blue Prince, when players enter a room, it counts as a step they take. Once they exhaust all steps, they must end their session and the game resets at sunrise, starting a fresh layout with new possibilities and challenges. This reset mechanic in Blue Prince encourages players to carefully consider each move, similar to playing a roguelike game. As Ros explains, players can strategically use the reset to ensure no puzzle halts their progression. Furthermore, some improvements to the blueprint offer permanent benefits, but these rewards are more elusive to find.
For Rose, devising strategies is undeniably the most enjoyable part of playing games, and his ambition was to create a game that would captivate both strategic thinkers and puzzle aficionados alike. Rose emphasizes that exploration is another fundamental aspect of this game called “Blue Prince“, as the intricate puzzles within it offer more than one solution rather than just one. This means that while exploring, players can stumble upon various items and hints that may lead to alternative solutions for these puzzles. Rose points out that this setup stimulates player creativity when finding ways around obstacles, all while maintaining a balance in the difficulty of the puzzles.
In other words, the level of challenge in the puzzle mainly depends on the player, as they can choose when to solve it based on when they believe they have gathered sufficient information.
Ros notes that Dogubomb has been testing “Blue Prince” since 2020, and the team has spent the last four years scrutinizing “numerous playthroughs” totaling hundreds of hours to perfect “Blue Prince”. He finds it rewarding that the demo of “Blue Prince” has received mostly favorable feedback. Given that the demo allowed players a four-day exploration, Ros expresses curiosity about which puzzles and challenges will be most appreciated when the complete game is unveiled.
