- The Sharingan’s ability to control Tailed Beasts can be traced back to the lineage of the Sage of Six Paths.
In the Naruto franchise, Dojutsu is often seen as the ultimate manifestation of power. However, when it comes to these visual abilities, the Sharingan stands out as a leader among its peers. Equipped with numerous evolutions, exclusive talents, and capabilities that can reshape reality itself, the Sharingan is a coveted power that far surpasses its contemporaries. Among its many skills, the Susanoo and Amaterasu demonstrate the Dojutsu’s immense power. Yet, there’s another underappreciated skill — Tailed Beast Control — that often goes unnoticed. This ability, while not as flashy as its counterparts, plays a crucial role in the overall strength of the Sharingan.
The Mangekyo Sharingan, known for its extensive powers, also allows the user to command Tailed Beasts. This power, although not frequently demonstrated within the Naruto series, underscores the unparalleled might of the Mangekeyo Sharingan and its potential as a formidable tool when wielded skillfully.
What Is Tailed Beast Control?
Taming Tailed Beasts And Their Chakra
In the world of Naruto, I’ve come across colossal entities known as Tailed Beasts, which are essentially living weapons of immense Chakra power. Mastering these monstrous beings is considered a near-impossible task, yet some Shinobi have managed to do so in various ways. Interestingly, it’s the Jinchuriki who are recognized for their ability to control Tailed Beasts from within, but there are other methods as well. These beasts can also be subdued externally, using techniques such as Hashirama’s Wood Release, the Rinnegan’s Outer Path abilities, or the Mangekyou Sharingan.
Mastering Tailed Beast Control is undeniably a daunting endeavor, whether you’re a Jinchuriki or a Shinobi. For the Jinchuriki, it demands tremendous courage and strength to subdue the beast’s power and fully command their Chakra. It’s no less challenging for a Shinobi who seeks control through external means like the Mangekyou Sharingan’s Tailed Beast suppression.
Interestingly, it’s been observed that Hashirama, a former Hokage, managed to control multiple Tail Beasts using his Wood Release technique, known as the Hokage-Style Elder Jutsu: 10th Edict on Enlightenment. This is because Wood Release inherently absorbs Tailed Beast Chakra, effectively rendering them powerless through this unique ability, making it one of the simplest methods to subdue such beasts.
The Sharingan’s Tailed Beast Control
The Mangekyo Allows Its Users to Momentarily Tame Tailed Beasts

In the world of Naruto, the Sharingan is famed for numerous impressive feats, but one underestimated power it possesses is its capacity to subdue and contain Tailed Beasts. This ability was demonstrated in two distinct ways within the series. Initially, Sasuke employed his basic 3-Tomoe Sharingan to suppress the Nine-Tails Chakra that was escaping from Naruto. While this isn’t precisely tailed beast control, it shares similarities with the idea of subduing a Tailed Beast, but on a smaller level.
The regular Sharingan can’t manage a Tailed Beast, but only the Mangekyo Sharingan has that power. With the Mangekyo, users can control a Tailed Beast by maintaining eye contact, much like they might trap an enemy in a Genjutsu. Once controlled, the beast functions like a summoned creature. However, to summon a Tailed Beast this way demands an enormous quantity of chakra, which most Uchiha members struggle to produce.
It’s important to understand that using the Mangekyou Sharingan to control a Tailed Beast isn’t equivalent to the full mastery of a Tailed Beast by a Jinchuriki. Because the Sharingan can’t actually control the Tailed Beast, it acts more like an enraged wild animal instead. This suggests that controlling a Tailed Beast with the Mangekyou Sharingan is significantly less effective compared to the comprehensive control a Jinchuriki possesses.
Every Mangekyo User That Can Control Tailed Beasts
Only Limited Mangekyo Sharingan Wielders Can Control Tailed Beasts
In the Naruto series, it’s suggested that the Sharingan can manipulate Tailed Beasts to some degree, but we don’t see this ability being used often at lower levels. The only characters who have demonstrated the use of Tailed Beast control through the Sharingan are Madara Uchiha and Obito Uchiha. In his fight against Hashirama Senju, Madara utilized his Mangekyou to command the Nine-Tails, using it more like a summoned creature, although this summoning wasn’t bound by a blood pact.
Through this approach, mastering Kurama required an enormous amount of chakra, giving him a restricted time frame for command. Compared to Madara’s control, which included encasing Kurama in Susanoo armor, Obito’s was relatively fragile. Yet, he managed to trigger a rampage from the Nine-Tails with his Mangekyou Sharingan, an occurrence that significantly influenced Naruto‘s storyline. Although these two instances are the sole examples of full Tailed Beast control via the Sharingan, another instance hints at the basic Sharingan having a subtle influence on Tailed Beasts as well.
So this is your unknown power. So you must be the Nine-Tailed Fox, huh…?
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but marvel at Sasuke’s ability to subdue Kurama’s chakra using his basic Sharingan in the Naruto series. This incredible feat suggests that even a base dojutsu like the Sharingan might possess some level of control over Tailed Beast chakra, which is quite intriguing!
This idea gains more credence when we consider the rumors that circulated after the Nine-Tails’ rampage. The villagers suspected the Uchiha clan, as they were aware that the Sharingan could potentially tame Kurama. At the time, it was unclear that the Uchiha had evolved their Sharingan into the Mangekyo, so they believed that even the basic form might have the potential to control Tailed Beasts.
However, not every Mangekyou Sharingan user shares this ability. Take Kakashi for example; despite possessing the Mangekyou Sharingan, he never used it to regulate the Nine-Tails’ chakra within Naruto. This tells us that while the Sharingan may have some control over Tailed Beast chakra, not every user can harness this power.
How Does The Sharingan Suppress Tailed Beasts?
The Sharingan Can Be Traced Back to the Sage Of Six Paths

The Sharingan is unique among Dojutsus for its ability to manage Tailed Beast power, a skill most other eye powers cannot replicate. Even the mighty Rinnegan falls short in this regard, requiring specific abilities like the Outer Path and Black Rods to subdue Tailed Beasts. This unusual characteristic can be traced back to the Uchiha Clan’s ancestry that links them to the Sage of Six Paths.
Given that the Sharingan originated from Indra Otsutsuki, the son of the Sage of Six Paths, it’s reasonable to assume this power comes from the same source. This theory gains more credibility when we consider Hashirama, a reincarnation of Asura, who can control Tailed Beasts through his unique Kekkei Genkai. Since both powers stem from the abilities of the Sage of Six Paths, who was the originator of the concept of Tailed Beasts, it’s logical to infer that these two clans might possess the power to subdue these Chakra giants as well.
Naruto is available to stream on Prime Video.
