Regrettably, even the gaming world has been affected by this trend, resulting in popular games and franchises often being shortened to only two or three letters when discussed online.
Many abbreviations used in video games are generally straightforward, yet some can be shared among various games and series. This common occurrence of identical acronyms has often resulted in perplexity among gamers, who might find themselves questioning the intention behind executing Fatalities during a game of Mario Kart or pondering the significance of caring about turnips within Assassin’s Creed.
1. AC
Assassin’s Creed or Animal Crossing?
When discussing puzzling video game abbreviations, AC might be the first one that comes to mind. It’s found in two highly recognized franchises, Assassin’s Creed and Animal Crossing, but there are numerous other significant games and series where these two letters could apply. Among them are Armored Core, Assetto Corsa, and Ace Combat, which quickly come to mind, with Astral Chain and Advent Children (the animated sequel to Final Fantasy VII) also deserving a mention.

Mortal Kombat or Mario Kart?

For PlayStation, it’s Santa Monica Studio’s acclaimed “God of War” series, while for Xbox, they boast the successful “Gears of War” franchise.

Team Fortress or Titanfall?
In general usage, the abbreviation TF is often associated with Team Fortress due to its long history and widespread recognition among gamers. However, for approximately three to four years in the mid-2010s, some gamers used TF as a nickname for Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall series, even though it doesn’t technically stand for anything. Dark Souls or Dead Space?
Similar to AC, the term DC (which stands for Direct Current) is connected to several video game franchises in a significant way. Among these, the most recognized are Dark Souls and Dead Space. However, it’s also used to refer to other popular games such as Darksiders, Don’t Starve, and Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. To add to this, it’s also the name of a 2004 handheld console from Nintendo. Unfortunately, you can’t play DS (short for these franchises) on a DS, as none of them were ever developed for that system.
