This article contains spoilers from the Solo Leveling manhwa.
Summary
- Jin-Woo doesn’t avoid shadow naming, just selectively names the more powerful ones.
- Memory is not an issue for Jin-Woo; he can easily recall shadow names.
- Jin-Woo can only name shadows ranked Knight or higher in Solo Leveling.
It’s quite intriguing how Jin-Woo names his elite shadows in “Solo Leveling“. He chooses names based on the shadow’s original identity, appearance, or character. These shadows seem proud to be named, but lesser ones like foot soldiers remain nameless. This has sparked curiosity among readers as to why Jin-Woo doesn’t name all his shadows in “Solo Leveling“.
In Season 1, Jin-Woo gained the power to pull shadows from fallen enemies. Following his promotion to Shadow Monarch after completing a quest for a job change, he acquired the unique skill, Shadow Extraction. Since then, he’s successfully extracted exceptional shadows from Igris, Tank, Iron, Tusk, and Beru in various locations. However, one question remains: what about the other shadows that have yet to be named?
It’s Not Because Jin-Woo Is Too Lazy To Give a Name
He Doesn’t Avoid Shadow Naming at All

In the world of Solo Leveling, Jin-Woo has converted many of the formidable adversaries he vanquished into shadow soldiers. With the exception of Baruka and Baran, he’s managed to transform his enemies into allies with a simple command in the anime. As they are extracted, these shadows receive distinctive yet significant names, which gives them a new identity and strengthens their bond with their master more than ever before.
It’s quite apparent that Jin-Woo tends to name only the powerful soldiers under his command, seemingly disregarding the rest. Among these are foot soldiers, high orcs, ice bears, and even mages within the army. In contrast to Rimuru Tempest from ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’, who spends entire days bestowing names upon his subordinates, Jin-Woo only assigns names to shadows that have demonstrated their capabilities.
“Do the undead feel fear? Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter.” —Sung Jin-Woo
Jin-Woo’s lack of immediate naming for certain Shadows doesn’t necessarily imply laziness. Instead, there are specific reasons behind his decision not to assign names right away. For example, he admitted that coming up with a name for Boss Naga felt like too much effort at times. Unlike other instances where he carefully pondered over the names, this time he just went with his gut, choosing a name spontaneously rather than deliberating extensively.
It’s Not a Memory Issue Either
Their Number Is Not the Problem

Although it might seem that Jin-Woo doesn’t name his shadows because remembering each one would be challenging for him, this isn’t actually the case. Since Jin-Woo is connected to his shadows through shared senses, it’s unlikely he’d have trouble recalling their names. Additionally, Jin-Woo has access to a System that can effortlessly show and remind him of all his shadow’s names whenever necessary.
To put it simply, the issue isn’t the number of shadows but rather Jin-Woo’s possible emotional bond with those shadows once he assigns them names. Although Jin-Woo isn’t overly sentimental, it could prove difficult for him to eliminate the shadows he brought into existence when it’s time to replace them later on.
“I can’t keep hiding in the shadows like a weakling.” —Sung Jin-Woo
Jin-Woo Can’t Name All of His Shadows Due to Their Grade
There’s an Existing Class Distinction
Sung Jin-Woo’s Named Shadows | |
---|---|
Original Name | New Name |
Blood Red Commander Igris | Igris |
Leader of the Ice Bears | Tank |
Kim Chul | Iron |
Kargalgan | Tusk |
Kaisellin | Kaisel |
Ant King | Beru |
Boss Naga | Jima |
Hwang Dong-Soo | Greed |
In chapter 45 of the series Solo Leveling, it’s shown that Jin-Woo can bestow names only upon shadows who have reached or surpassed the rank of Knight. The very first shadow he named was none other than Blood Red Commander Igris, a powerful knight safeguarding an empty throne within the job-changing dungeon. He opted to call him Igris because it’s a more straightforward and less awkward name compared to his original one.
Moving forward, Jin-Woo called out his top-tier shadows such as the Ant King, the Naga Boss, and Hwang Dong-Soo, a renowned S-rank hunter. This implies that these shadows had surpassed others in rank at the time of extraction. As shadows can grow in power alongside Jin-Woo, it remains uncertain if he could also give names to his lower-ranked soldiers who might advance to knight level. Considering the rules within the world of Solo Leveling, it’s probable that he has that ability.
