To mark The Sims‘s twenty-fifth year, Electronic Arts (EA) and Maxis have planned a host of fresh content to commemorate this milestone. The team behind The Sims unveiled the celebrations during a special stream called “Behind The Sims 25th Birthday Special”. Initially, new content will be made available from January 16. Although one Kit was disclosed in the stream, two more were kept secret until the release day. These hidden Kits sparked great excitement among dedicated players (Simmers), as they could potentially influence future Kit content significantly.
The 25th Birthday Special stream for The Sims 25th anniversary was primarily focused on Simmers, featuring recurrent references to obscure aspects of The Sims and exciting free updates for players. Over the next two months, it seems that Simmers will be in for a treat with these new developments. The upcoming Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits serve as great examples of how EA and Maxis plan to create content related to The Sims in the coming period.
Kits Fit to Celebrate The Sims’ 25th Anniversary
New Kit Pricing
Prior to January 16th, each Kit released for The Sims game had a particular feature it focused on – either new Create-A-Sim items, Build and Buy items, or gameplay enhancements. These Kits were designed this way to distinguish them from Stuff Packs, the most affordable level of DLC for The Sims series, and to keep their $5 price point consistent. Over the years, Stuff Packs, Game Packs, and Expansion Packs have been an essential part of The Sims franchise. However, when Kits were introduced in 2021, it sparked controversy upon announcement due to the high cost of acquiring all DLC for The Sims 4.
These new kits, the Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits, are open to being criticized by players due to their release. At $5 per kit, they come with a combination of new CAS Build and Buy items. This might lead players to express concerns about the launch. However, it’s important to note that these kits contain a similar number of total items as other kits, which somewhat mitigates any potential backlash. Additionally, the themes of these two kits could potentially sway players’ opinions in their favor.
New Kit Theming
In essence, both the Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave kits are designed around beloved characters from the Sims universe. The Secret Sanctuary kit draws inspiration from fashion icon Bella Goth, while the Casanova Cave kit is modeled after Don Lothario, a known lady’s man. By introducing these character-themed kits, we’re marking an exciting milestone in the Sims franchise – its twenty-fifth anniversary.
I’ve been thoroughly impressed with how these Kits align with the recent facelift the Sims team has given to their base game. The Townie and Residential areas in Willow Creek and Oasis Springs have seen a significant upgrade, as evidenced by the patch released on January 15. This update includes iconic locations like Ophelia Manor, home of the Goth family, and Sultry Springside, residences of the Caliente and Lothario households. To sweeten the deal, there are new themed items for these characters that make me eager to explore these updates firsthand.
Nonetheless, the Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits might significantly alter the construction of Sims Kits. The concepts behind each of these Kits substantially broaden the possibilities for what can be incorporated into this particular kind of downloadable content, potentially causing some confusion among players despite their referential themes.
Stuff and Game Packs Are Being Left Behind
The significant influence that the Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits might exert on The Sims 4’s future lies primarily in their pricing and content. Typically, these kits add only a single feature to The Sims 4. However, the presence of both Create-a-Sim (CAS) and Build and Buy items in Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave sets a new trend for multiple types of content to be incorporated into Kits.
Due to the shift in focus, EA and Maxis might need to adapt how they handle Stuff Packs within The Sims 4. The most recent Stuff Pack, Crystal Creations, came out around a year ago on February 29, 2024. Since then, two Expansion Packs and thirteen Kits have been rolled out, with no new Game Pack since the release of Werewolves in June 2022. This trend towards more frequent Kit releases and less emphasis on Stuff and Game Packs suggests that EA and Maxis are dedicating more resources to smaller updates. However, if multiple features can be incorporated into a single Kit, there’s a risk that Stuff and Game Packs may become obsolete.
If we see an enhancement in the scope of Kits offered, it’s reasonable to expect more content in Stuff and Game Packs as well. Over time, The Sims 4 has seen improvements in the quality and content richness of its DLC, without any increase in cost. Similarly, the Secret Sanctuary and Cassanova Cave Kits have maintained their original $5 price point. While there’s no current reason for players to worry about DLC price hikes, the future remains uncertain.
More Townies Could Get Their Own Content
The Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits suggest even more excitement coming to The Sims 4. Unlike any other Kit or DLC for The Sims 4, these are themed around one of the game’s popular resident characters (Townies). Other DLC packs have re-introduced beloved franchise figures such as Bonehilda in the Paranormal Stuff Pack, and enhanced existing characters like the Grim Reaper, but never before has a complete pack or Kit been dedicated to Townies.
2025 could be an ideal time to unveil this idea, given that it marks the silver jubilee of the Sims franchise, offering a chance to explore if self-referential elements persist or evolve further down the line. Since many of the game’s beloved Townies are included in The Sims 4’s core gameplay, players might feel disgruntled by the monetization tactics that affect base game features.
If EA and Maxis intend to create more downloadable content focused on Townies, they should proceed with caution. So far, the method of including well-known Townies from earlier versions in new packs has been successful, but extending the concepts behind Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits into full-fledged packs for Townies might not be the best choice. Today, these expansions, Secret Sanctuary and Casanova Cave Kits, are now available for purchase in The Sims 4.
