Spoilers ahead for Red Dead Redemption 2!
8. Micah Bell
A Ruthless Cut-Throat Killer Who Oozes with Selfishness
- Bravest Act: Shooting up the town of Strawberry for two revolvers
- Portrayed by: Peter Blomquist
As a devoted admirer, I must confess that there are hardly any characters as cunningly self-centered as Micah Bell. To me, he’s like a canny little rodent whispering in Dutch’s ear, a venomous snake disguised in human form and a cowboy hat who stirs up conflict among others merely to safeguard his own questionable reputation.
However, it’s challenging not to acknowledge a flicker of courage hidden within him. After all, he played a pivotal role in overthrowing the dictator of Guarma, battling countless Pinkertons, and annihilating the Grays from Rhodes with just two revolvers.
Micah was a traitor to the Van der Linde gang, informing on them to the Pinkertons, which made him both a rat and a coward. Yet, despite this, he used his wit and guile to survive longer than many others in the gang. He may not have been the bravest member, but his cunning was undoubtedly one of the most prominent.
7. Agent Andrew Milton
The Pinkerton Agent Who Pursues His Targets with Unending Fury
- Bravest Act: Ruthlessly hunting a gang of thieves and killers
- Portrayed by: John Hickok
Agent Milton despises individuals who resist conforming to a society with its share of laws, flaws, and all. He frequently tracks down Dutch Van der Linde and his gang, often encountering and confronting those who idolize barbarism during this pursuit across different states. More often than not, Milton offers them the opportunity to surrender Dutch Van der Linde, providing a chance for the others to escape first.
Agent Milton recognizes that he’s up against outlaws, dealing with ruthless criminals who wouldn’t think twice about shooting someone in the back. However, he remains firm and has confronted Dutch van der Linde and his top gunman, Arthur Morgan, on numerous instances without showing a hint of fear.
6. Dutch Van der Linde
The Leader of the Van der Linde Gang Who Fights Civilization and Gravity
- Bravest Act: Fighting against the impending arrival of civilization
- Portrayed by: Benjamin Byron Davis
It’s challenging not to feel a degree of empathy towards Dutch, given that he was once an inspiring figure who found himself disillusioned with society and civilization to such an extent that he chose to distance himself from it. Dutch is not one to back down from challenges, and his bravery has driven him into dangerous situations, even when fighting alongside manipulated troops, such as the U.S. Army.
Despite Dutch van der Linde’s valiant actions such as leaping from cliffs and confronting the Pinkertons in various states, his character is not without its imperfections. Most notably, he betrays Arthur, which contradicts the image of a fearless outlaw. Dutch’s cowardice, as shown by his choice to hide in the hills of West Elizabeth instead of facing the consequences, costs him the loyalty of many good men.
5. John Marston
The Golden Boy Who Defies His Leader and Fights for His Family
- Bravest Act: Being the only one to stand up to Dutch Van der Linde
- Portrayed by: Rob Wiethoff
John Marston is remarkably tenacious or fortunate. He’s managed to live through a wolf attack, imprisonment, and being shot from a speeding train, and each time, he reappeared with the Van der Linde gang, carrying his gravelly voice along. In 1899, John Marston was merely the younger brother of Arthur Morgan, who was known for his arrogance and disobedience, but he never hesitated to express his thoughts.
Amongst the Van der Linde gang’s young members, it’s only John who shows the courage to confront Dutch alongside Arthur. Even when the Pinkertons zero in on Beavers Hollow and John sustains an injury on his arm from a gunshot, he continues to fight valiantly with Arthur, demonstrating unwavering loyalty towards his brother.
4. Hercule Fontaine
A Freedom Fighter that Battles Against Tyranny
- Bravest Act: A freedom fighter who devotes his life to freeing the oppressed people of Guarma
- Portrayed by: Guyviaud Joseph
As a devoted follower, I can’t help but admire Hercule Fontaine – a beacon of courage whose unwavering dedication is centered on the liberation of Guarma’s captives and its people. This extraordinary Haitian hero stands tall against oppression, waging war against the island’s ruling fascists to ignite a rebellion that challenges Colonel Fussar’s tyranny. Together with his steadfast allies, Fontaine covertly supplies vital resources and takes down enemy soldiers, one by one, in our shared pursuit of freedom for Guarma.
Although Hercule might seem like a minor figure in the Guarma chapter of “Red Dead Redemption 2,” he certainly warrants admiration as an exceptionally courageous individual. He stands ready to battle for people he’s never met, simply because he firmly believes that suppression is unjustified.
3. Sadie Adler
The Widower Who Became a Renowned Bounty Hunter
- Bravest Act: Fighting remnants of the O’Driscolls with or without Arthur’s help
- Portrayed by: Alex McKenna
Initially, Sadie Adler wasn’t a bandit or a widow; instead, she had a peaceful life in the mountains, sharing it with her cherished spouse on their farm. However, the O’Driscolls cruelly took everything away from her, and since then, she has been driven by a relentless thirst for vengeance. Nowadays, Sadie doesn’t discriminate when it comes to taking lives, showcasing an unyielding gunslinger who might arrive late but is always warmly received.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “I’ll charge through flames if necessary, to protect the Marston family, even if I have to go it alone. I’m no coward, ’cause I’ve got nothing left to lose. That’s why I’m a tough bounty hunter and a fearsome force when it comes to the O’Driscolls.
2. Charles Smith
The Outcast Who Doesn’t Need a Home to Fight for What’s Right
- Bravest Act: Allying with the Wapiti Indian Reservation against the U.S. Army
- Portrayed by: Noshir Dalal
Regardless of the advancements in society, it appears as though there’s little space for Charles Smith, a man with both African and Indian heritage. Feeling out of place has always been a struggle for him, an emotion that simmers beneath his calm exterior until it erupts, unleashing his fury. However, Charles Smith exhibits true courage not only when he becomes aggressive but also in maintaining composure and confronting injustices.
Charles Smith is arguably the most noble member of the Van der Linde gang, displaying a strong commitment to justice and compassion, even advocating for the protection of defenseless animals who are unnecessarily killed. Unlike many who only engage in conflicts for their own benefit, Charles has shown willingness to sacrifice his life for causes that are not his own, demonstrating extraordinary bravery amidst warfare.
1. Arthur Morgan
The Outlaw Who Stares at Death with a Revolver in Hand
- Bravest Act: Standing unshaken against the Pinkertons and the Van der Linde gang
- Portrayed by: Roger Clark
Arthur Morgan consistently proves himself as a formidable gunslinger within the Van der Linde gang, and though he may voice reservations and discontent, he unwaveringly stands by Dutch, always armed and ready. Regardless if they’re confronting rival gangs, law enforcement, or even inciting conflict against the U.S. Army, Arthur Morgan refuses to retreat from a battle if it offers a glimmer of hope for escaping this life and safeguarding the gang – whatever remnants remain.
Regardless of Arthur’s palpable dread of mortality and the apprehension that comes with the uncharted, he displays immense courage by standing firm. When confronting death head-on, he exerts all his strength to hold on a bit longer, ensuring John survives and witnesses the sunrise one last time.
