Summary
- Focus on societal and ethical aspects sets The Walking Dead apart from typical apocalyptic shows.
- Complex characters like Carol and Morgan add depth to the post-apocalyptic world.
- Characters like Daryl, Negan, and Rick showcase dangerous yet compelling personas in the franchise.
The Walking Dead has had a tight grip on its fandom with a plethora of comic books, TV shows, games, and more content that features this apocalyptic world. Despite showcasing a well-known trope within apocalyptic media with a world destroyed by zombies, The Walking Dead’s true differential lies in its focus on the societal and ethical aspects that stem from such a threat. With most of humankind dead or half-dead, the franchise not only tells the story of the survivors dealing with the zombies, but also about how humankind changes after such a tragedy.
This results in some incredibly complex characters that are neither good nor evil, but rather are trying to survive in a world that has lost so much. Among such survivors are the protagonists and antagonists that have managed to stay alive through their brute strength, strategic thinking, unique skills, wickedness, solitude or even an amalgamation of all those aspects. Regardless of the side they are on, The Walking Dead features some incredibly dangerous characters that managed to impact this post-apocalyptic world with atrocious and brave acts.
8. Carol
From A Timid Side Character To A Savage Protagonist
- Played by: Melissa McBride
- Status: Alive
Initially a timid character portrayed as frail in the beginning of The Walking Dead, Carol’s dark side has shocked fans and deemed her a fan-favorite. Carol slowly becomes confident in herself, which made her more dangerous with every story arc in the franchise.
More recently, she joined Daryl as one of the protagonists in his spin-off series, showcasing why she has become one of the most savage survivors despite still showing humanity. Yet, her ruthlessness is what makes her truly dangerous, capable of making impossible decisions for the greater good, killing with little mercy and the conviction of doing the right thing.
7. Morgan Jones
A Disturbed Mind That Makes Him A Powerful Yet Unreliable Ally

- Played by: Lennie James
- Status: Alive
Morgan’s ever-changing character might make him unpopular at some points, yet it also makes him one of the most dangerous individuals in this post-apocalyptic world from the very start. The character is known for his unhinged nature, which makes him incredibly unpredictable, especially when it comes to his relationship with killing and revenge.
While his reluctance to kill may sometimes make him less of an apparent threat, it is also the reason that makes him such a menace, and a powerful yet unreliable ally. Whenever the character does kill, he goes on a rampage that shows how dangerous he truly is and how he can use his skills if he is not on top of his mental health.
6. Daryl Dixon
His Humanity Makes Him A Force To Be Reckoned With
- Played by: Norman Reedus
- Status: Alive
Although initially Daryl was portrayed in the TV show as gritty, rash and violent, he quickly became a fan favorite, showing some of his more kind and caring features. Yet, this should not be mistaken for a weakness; if anything, it only makes him a more dangerous character, ruled by emotion, led by a strong will and a badass attitude.
As one of the bravest characters in the franchise, Daryl has managed to stay alive by becoming a skilled survivor, with his crossbow and bike as companions. More recently, the character received a spin-off of his own where he shows why his humanity makes him bolder and more menacing than most.
5. Beta
A Fanatic That Embodied The True Threat Of The Whisperers

- Played by: Ryan Hurst
- Status: Dead
The Walking Dead is known for making complex villains, giving redeeming qualities to even the most despicable people. Yet, Beta might be one of the villains with the least empathetic qualities, devoting himself solely to Alpha. Guided by revenge, Beta’s ruthlessness comes from his fanatic nature that takes away any humanity he might have had.
Overall, the Whisperers posed such a big threat by using zombie hoards to kill, and Beta personified that danger in the TV show. While Alpha is just as menacing, turning everyone into a zealot, Beta is the result of her ability to manipulate, showcasing the lengths her followers are willing to go and follow blindly.
4. Michonne
A Warrior That Uses Skill And Humanity As A Weapon
- Played by: Danai Gurira
- Status: Alive
Michonne’s role in The Walking Dead has changed considerably since her introduction, yet the one aspect that has stayed the same is how tenacious and dangerous she is. Initially taming two zombies, Michonne’s character truly is the definition of badass, yet what makes her truly dangerous is her loyalty, which turns her from a solitary warrior to a one-person army.
Not only one of the best hand-to-hand fighters, the mix of her skill and humanity makes her a relentless warrior, capable of going to impossible lengths for the people she loves. As one of the strongest characters, Michonne has featured in some of the most epic scenes of the franchise.
3. Negan
A Ruthelessly Complex Villain Dangerously Charismatic
- Played by: Jeffrey Dean Morgan
- Status: Alive
Negan’s introduction on the TV Show is the perfect example of how ruthless he can be, featuring some of the most shocking deaths in The Walking Dead, while also being a fan-favorite. The fact that he beats people to death with his bare hands proves how callous he can be, despite having enough depth to have a conscience.
Not only a worshiped leader, a ruthless antagonist and a complex character, Negan quickly became one of the best villains in the franchise. While he did show some redeemable characteristics, the lives he took and all the damage he did as the leader of the Saviors is only proof of how potentially dangerous he can be in an apocalypse, appealing to everyone’s darkest desires.
2. The Governor
Sadistic Nature Meets Sinister Personality To Create A True Villain
- Played by: David Morissey
- Status: Dead
On the surface, the Governor was able to lead a thriving and peaceful community amid an apocalypse, even if it was built on the blood of others. His treacherous nature and sinister personality proved him a dangerous enemy, as he led Rick and the group into a false sense of security only to endanger their lives for the entertainment of his people.
Besides killing outsiders for his own benefit, he was also more than willing to sacrifice his own people for his own twisted goals. His sadistic nature and savior complex made him a heartless villain that did a lot of damage for quite some time before his bleak end, yet his sorrowful backstory makes him even more compelling as an antagonist.
1. Rick Grimes
A Deadly Protagonist Capable Of Atrocities In The Name Of Good
- Played by: Andrew Lincoln
- Status: Alive
He might be the protagonist, but that does not mean that Rick is a classic good person like so many traditional main characters. Rick Grimes has done so much to keep him and his group alive, including some atrocious things. While he wants to do the right thing and be a good person, usually driven by good motives, Rick has been the villain to other people in the story multiple times.
By far the deadliest person in The Walking Dead, Rick has been pushed and pulled by the horrors of this apocalyptic world, suffering so much loss. His commitment to surviving and keeping his loved ones alive has forced him to do some truly atrocious things, besting not only villains but also other survivors. With a massive kill list, scarce mercy, leadership role and a true survival instinct, Rick has proved many times that he is the most dangerous character in this zombie-filled universe.
