Although Sony canceled the planned multiplayer spin-off of The Last of Us Part 2, a small independent team is creating a new game heavily inspired by the Factions mode from The Last of Us. Fans hoping for a realistic and intense multiplayer experience similar to The Last of Us Part 2 should watch for updates on this project.
The multiplayer mode in the first Last of Us game, called Factions, was very popular with players. Fans hoped the sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, would also have a similar multiplayer experience. When Naughty Dog announced a new online game set in the same world, it was initially seen as a continuation of Factions, often referred to as “Factions 2.” However, the project was ultimately canceled. Naughty Dog officially confirmed the cancellation of The Last of Us Online in December 2023.
Indie Devs Make Their Own Gritty Multiplayer Game in Response to The Last of Us Online’s Cancellation
Currently available to add to your Steam Wish List, Terminal War is a competitive multiplayer game developed by indie studio Albatross Interactive. It’s heavily inspired by the Factions mode in The Last of Us, but instead of a fungal outbreak, it’s set in a 1990s America devastated by World War 3. The country is fractured into warring groups, and players choose a faction to fight for in this dark alternate history.

Albatross Interactive hasn’t announced when the game will be released yet. However, the game’s Steam page indicates that the developers plan to launch an early access version at some point. While Steam has many good co-op shooters, Terminal War’s focus on realism could help it become popular. The gameplay footage released so far shows combat that strongly resembles the The Last of Us series.
A Brief Look at Terminal War’s Confirmed Features
- Melee-focused combat
- Third-person
- The freedom to be stealthy or aggressive
- Scarce resource management
- Minimal loadouts
- Three factions to join: The Federal Faction, The Free States Faction, and The Rebellion Faction
- 4v4 matches
Look, The Last of Us Part 2 split people, but almost everyone agreed the combat was incredible. I, like a lot of gamers, was really hoping to see that same intense fighting in a multiplayer game, but it never happened. Now, this new game, Terminal War, might actually deliver on that dream. It’s going to be tough to match how good Naughty Dog made the combat feel, but I’m really hoping this indie project surprises us when it hits early access. Honestly, even after six years, The Last of Us Part 2 is still considered one of the best in terms of combat, so Terminal War has a lot to live up to!
It remains to be seen if the new game, Terminal War, can ease the disappointment of Sony’s cancellation of The Last of Us Online. Sony has canceled several online games recently, but The Last of Us Online was particularly promising. The Factions mode in The Last of Us Part 1 showed that a gritty, realistic online experience within that universe could be successful. While The Last of Us Online won’t happen, Terminal War might offer a similar experience.
