R.E.P.O. offers vast possibilities for its narrative and the tales it can spin due to the lack of definitive explanations as one delves into the numerous perilous levels. The game’s monster designs and fan speculations contribute significantly, creating a rich tapestry of lore that gamers are eagerly trying to unravel to construct a cohesive story. However, among the most baffling enigmas, what remains unexplained?
In the game R.E.P.O., numerous enigmatic mysteries abound, and though a solution may eventually be found, the game’s early access leaves players bewildered in their Semibot forms as they tirelessly seek to fathom the happenings within this post-apocalyptic universe.
6. What Happened to Humanity?
Skeletons and Human-Like Monsters Raise Questions
As a fan, one intriguing question I find myself pondering in R.E.P.O. is about the fate of humanity. Scattered across various levels and even the marketplace, I’ve stumbled upon the remains of what seem to be human skeletons. These skeletons serve as a stark reminder of how small Semibots are compared to us, and they underscore the fact that this planet appears devoid of living humans – whether it’s a relief or not, it’s hard to say. Seeing so many lifeless remains, I can’t help but wonder if an apocalypse struck this world decades ago, leaving only dust and bones behind.
It’s quite puzzling indeed, for some of these monsters seem remarkably human-like in appearance. For instance, there’s the Upscream, boasting human characteristics but moving like a spider, which is already perplexing. However, the Rugrat, resembling a baby, is even more intriguing. And then we have the Huntsman, a man wrapped in bandages around his eyes and trailing blood, using a gun as a cane to traverse the halls. One wonders if he removed his own eyes to shield himself from the atrocities that have befallen humanity, and what catastrophic event led to such a state for mankind?
5. What Experiments Were the Wizards Running?
Dead Wizards at Swiftbroom Academy Have Cauldrons, Potions, and Death
At Swiftbroom Academy, players will delve into the grand chambers once inhabited by vanished wizards. Within these academy’s walls, they can unearth a variety of artifacts suggesting that magic was a fundamental aspect of human life prior to their apocalypse. These treasures include enchanted brooms, potent staffs, and portraits of wizards donning pointed hats.
At times, players might encounter the king wizard, a skeleton seated on his throne, leafing through a book. Yet, the cause of the wizards’ demise and their connection to Swiftbrook Academy remains a mystery. Could it be linked to the researchers at McJannek Station, or were they trying to escape, perhaps even transforming into the creatures haunting the academy’s corridors?
4. Who is the Taxman?
An AI that Communicates in Emojis and Trolls Employees

One intriguing enigma within R.E.P.O. revolves around the individual, or automated entity, overseeing the Semibots. Although these Semibots exhibit independent decision-making abilities, their strategic goals and subsequent actions are guided by a supervisor colloquially known as the taxman. This taxman serves as their employer, deriving amusement from teasing them, as suggested by the playful emojis frequently used in communication.
As a movie enthusiast, I ponder over the mysterious communiqué of the tax collector, expressed solely through the use of emojis. This digital entity appears to be an AI, confined to interact via the truck’s controls, computer consoles, and extraction points, unable to engage in traditional dialogue. The only visible aspect of this enigmatic character is a twisted, grinning emoji, complete with distorted eyes resembling flesh and a decayed mouth. But who hides behind these digital facades, and what ultimate purpose does it serve?
3. What Are Valuables Used For?
Why Does the Taxman Need Grand Pianos and Shiny Things?
The goal of R.E.P.O. is straightforward: gather valuable items to pay off taxes and move on to the next rest stop to keep surviving. However, while its design may appear simple, the motivation behind these valuables is quite intricate. What reasons could the taxman have for wanting these specific items? Could he possibly need a variety of crowns, rings, books, creature specimens, and even pianos?
From what the Semibots understand, these valuables seem primarily to maintain the economy and fund their wages, enabling them to buy personal items from stores. However, it remains unclear as to why the tax authorities are interested in these items, and who is buying them for a considerable sum of money.
2. Where Did the Monsters Come From?
The Origins of Monsters Both Human and Inhuman are Unexplained
In the game known as R.E.P.O., there are over 19 distinct types of monsters, with even more expected to appear in the future. Yet, their origins and true identities remain a puzzle. Many of these creatures exhibit humanoid traits, such as the Huntsman who is merely a blind man armed with a gun cane. However, there are also uniquely different ones like the Apex Predator and the Trudge.
Some monsters resemble humans in their structure, while others are drastically different, leaving us puzzled about their origin and purpose as they traverse the areas where Semibots operate. Could they be the remnants of an ancient civilization, left behind and evolved from a society long forgotten?
1. What Secrets Were Unearthed from the Fossils?
McJannek Station Holds Intense Mystery Regarding Unearthed Fossils
The truck transports the Semibots to McJannek Station, a possible research facility, either in Denmark or Greenland, suggested by Danish flags that may sometimes appear on the interior walls. This station is currently unoccupied, and within its confines, there are more intriguing questions about the laboratory’s past purposes, as hidden among the monstrous findings are deeper enigmas.
At McJannek Station, there were deceased scientists and enigmatic whiteboards, hinting at an uncertain objective for mankind. Among the station’s intriguing artifacts, such as creature samples and fossils, are frozen skeletons that are not human in origin. The identity of these skeletons, along with the taxman’s interest in them, remains a mystery. Could they be early human ancestors or the triggers for viruses that led to humanity’s extinction?
