For a long time, the narrative surrounding the Japanese branch of the Assassins’ Brotherhood remained shrouded in secrecy, despite being acknowledged by players throughout the series. However, with the arrival of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, that mystery is finally lifted, providing an in-depth exploration of this chapter in the Brotherhood’s history. As soon as the game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” begins, players find themselves stepping into the role of the future assassin, Naoe. They witness the fall of the Brotherhood, aid in its restoration to its previous strength, and uncover the series of events that preceded this turn of events during their journey. Though not all aspects have been disclosed yet, the narrative presented by “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is intriguing. Prior to the events of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, Naoe’s mother Tsuyu, along with other assassins, was assigned the mission to create a fresh Brotherhood in Japan. They achieved this goal, and the Japanese branch of the Brotherhood flourished across the land, with their primary objective being the protection of the three Imperial Regalia. However, they were pursued by a secretive band of samurai called the Shinbakufu who ultimately wiped out many assassins, leaving only three survivors behind. These remaining members escaped with the last piece of the Regalia, intending to safeguard it from their adversaries.

In the beginning of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, the Brotherhood has significantly diminished, with only Nagato’s father, Nagato, and Sandayu remaining from the original group. Regrettably, both Nagato and Sandayu perish at the hands of Oda Nobunga and his forces. At the start of the game, Nagato is slain, while protagonist Naoe is believed to be dead. As players progress through the story, they also uncover that Yasuke was responsible for Sandayu’s death, leaving the entire Brotherhood severely depleted.

It is Up to Naoe and Yasuke to Rebuild What Was Lost

After Nagato’s final moments, he urges Naoe to trace the edge, a request I vow to fulfill once I regain my strength. With a burning desire for vengeance in my heart, I embark on a journey to avenge his death. In this quest, I also strive to establish a sisterhood of assassins modeled on our shared ideals.

The construction of our secret sanctuary consumes much of my time, serving as the base where our fellowship can find solace and prepare for our missions. As I cross paths with various allies, many of them join me in this fight against the Shinbakufu. Eventually, even Yasuke, a formidable warrior, lends his skills to our cause, strengthening our bond as we stand together against oppression.

In unison, they strive to eradicate wickedness from the world and rejuvenate what was once destroyed. The central theme of the narrative in Assassin’s Creed Shadow lends itself to a captivating plotline, one that stands out amidst the series. Unlike previous Assassin’s Creed games where players often rebuilt a decimated Brotherhood, this particular storyline hasn’t been explored for some time. Instead, gamers have either not fully assumed the role of an Assassin or worked within a well-established Brotherhood. As such, this new direction offers a refreshing twist to the series.

With additional content coming up in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, it’s reasonable to assume that there are still numerous tales about the Brotherhood yet to be revealed. The early years of this organization remain largely unexplored, and Ubisoft has only begun to delve into the stories of some surviving members. Therefore, much of what happens next is still uncharted territory. For now, players can only anticipate where the adventure of Naoe and Yasuke leads them next.
