Although many theories were explored, the FBI’s primary suspect was a man named James Lewis. However, law enforcement never managed to connect Lewis to the murders, despite his conviction for extortion related to a threatening letter he sent to Johnson and Johnson, the manufacturers of Tylenol. In this letter, he claimed responsibility for the crimes and demanded $1 million to halt the killings. Consequently, Lewis was given a 10-year prison sentence for that crime.

Previously, Lewis had been implicated in a criminal case. Back in 1978, he was indicted for the murder of accountant Raymond West, but due to questionable police methods, he managed to avoid being found guilty.
