Rocket League is getting a major visual upgrade with the new Unreal Engine 6, Epic Games announced. During the Rocket League Paris Major event in 2026, Epic Games showed off live gameplay footage of the game running on the updated engine. While they didn’t share a specific release date for this upgrade, it’s still unknown when Unreal Engine 6 will be generally available.
First launched in 2015, Rocket League is a consistently popular game where players enjoy fast-paced, car-based soccer. It’s easy to pick up and play, but offers a high skill ceiling for dedicated players. Originally built with Unreal Engine 3, the game’s development began in 2013. In 2019, Epic Games acquired the game’s developer, Psyonix, and made Rocket League free-to-play, integrating it more closely with the Unreal Engine.

Although Unreal Engine 5 is quickly becoming the standard for game development, Unreal Engine 6 is still several years from being released and widely used. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney first mentioned the new engine in 2025, but a recent demonstration in Rocket League marks the first public glimpse of UE6. Based on the development timeline of Unreal Engine 5, a complete release of UE6 is probably two to three years away.
Unreal Engine 6 promises a significant jump in graphics quality for upcoming games. While Unreal Engine 5 debuted in 2020 and became available in early access in 2021, it took time to become widely adopted by the gaming industry, even after its official release in 2022. It did, however, noticeably improve how immersive games felt. Several popular games are already being made with Unreal Engine 5, including Black Myth: Wukong, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and Borderlands 4, among others.

Several highly anticipated games, including The Witcher 4 and Halo: Campaign Evolved, are being built with Unreal Engine 5. As these games are developed, and Epic Games releases early access to Unreal Engine 6, some developers might switch to the newer version. While Halo: Campaign Evolved, slated for release in 2026, likely won’t make that change, CD Projekt Red could potentially use Unreal Engine 6 for a game like Cyberpunk 2. In the meantime, players can expect to see a visually upgraded Rocket League thanks to Unreal Engine 6.
