Wizards of the Coast offers a sneak peek at six brand-new cards from the forthcoming “Universes Beyond” set of Magic: the Gathering, due later this year. Over the years, the widely played trading card game has frequently integrated various well-known franchises into its gameplay. Previous crossovers for Magic include sets and cards inspired by titles like Fallout and Assassin’s Creed, as well as cultural icons such as Doctor Who. Yet, the year 2025 promises a significant alteration in how crossover cards are handled within Magic.
Last year, Wizards of the Coast officially announced a significant shift in how they manage their “Universes Beyond” sets for Magic: the Gathering, stating that these sets will now be Standard-legal starting this summer. This change was first implemented with the much-awaited release of the Final Fantasy expansion and will continue to future releases as well. Previously, crossover content for Magic: the Gathering was confined to formats like “Modern” and the popular “Commander” format. Now, another highly-anticipated “Universes Beyond” expansion is unveiling its first previews.
According to IGN’s report, Wizards of the Coast has unveiled some initial cards from the upcoming Magic: the Gathering Spider-Man set. This assortment includes four “Legendary Creature” cards, with Spider-Man accompanied by three of his well-known adversaries – Venom, Doc Ock, and the Green Goblin. Each card seems to offer a distinct gameplay style; for instance, Spider-Man uses stun counters to draw cards, Doc Ock transforms Artifacts into Creatures, while the Green Goblin gains +1/+1 counters and generates Treasure Tokens when discarding cards. Additionally, the borderless art for each card was displayed, creating a cohesive scene of Spidey engaged in combat with his signature villains when assembled.
Magic: the Gathering Reveals Spider-Man Cards

- Target opponent mills eight cards. You may put an artifact card from that player’s graveyard onto the battlefield under your control.
Pumpkin Bombs
- 1 Red, 1 Colorless
- Artifact
- (Tap), Discard two cards: Draw three cards, then put a fuse counter on this artifact. It deals damage equal to the number of fuse counters on it to target opponent. They gain control of this artifact.
In addition to the well-known hero and antagonists, the initial disclosure also showcases two additional cards that can significantly alter a game. The “Grasping Tentacles” Sorcery, based on Doc Ock, forces an opponent to discard eight cards from their deck before taking an Artifact from their graveyard to your battlefield. “Pumpkin Bombs”, when played, allows players to activate Green Goblin’s discard effect by getting rid of two cards and drawing three more, dealing damage to an opponent and taking control of the card. The Magic: the Gathering expansion featuring Spider-Man from the Universes Beyond is set to launch on September 26.
The initial unveiling of Spider-Man isn’t the first time Wizards of the Coast has collaborated with Marvel for a variety of novel cards. In late 2024, Magic: the Gathering introduced a Marvel-themed “Secret Lair” drop, featuring cards inspired by legendary characters such as Captain America, Storm, and Black Panther. Wizards of the Coast has also announced the upcoming Universes Beyond set following Spider-Man, with Avatar: The Last Airbender from Nickelodeon set to join the card game. It seems that Magic: the Gathering is planning to continue its new Universes Beyond venture with the arrival of Spider-Man.
