In the manga Solo Leveling, Sung Jin-Woo’s transformation from the world’s most frail hunter to one of its mightiest characters is quite remarkable. As Jin-Woo progresses and gains strength, he amasses a formidable force that materializes in response to his summons. This army, known as the Shadow Army, stands as one of the highest points of Jin-Woo’s power within the series because they grow more powerful with each encounter and develop parallel to their leader.
Comprising various creatures and warriors, Jin-Woo’s army originates from his victories at the gates or the System’s dungeons. Some were once noble knights, others were fearsome beasts, while a few were even adversaries that had previously crossed swords with him before joining forces under Jin-Woo in the Solo Leveling series.
1. Igris
The Crimson Knight

- First Appearance: Season 1, Episode 11
If Jin-Woo’s army were to appoint a general, it would be fitting to choose Igris. Prior to joining Jin-Woo’s secretive military force, Igris was a formidable adversary. In his initial appearance, he is introduced as the Blood-Red Commander Igris, a knight adorned in intense crimson armor, standing guard over a throne. During one of Jin-Woo’s assignments within the Instant dungeons assigned by the System, Igris crossed paths with Jin-Woo and engaged him in combat with determination. The exceptional skill demonstrated in wielding his weapon suggests that Igris is unlike any other dungeon bosses Jin-Woo has encountered before.
As Jin-Woo engaged in battle with Igris, he was still expanding his understanding of his freshly acquired powers. Yet, despite Igris possessing vast abilities, Jin-Woo managed to defeat him. Following Igris’s defeat in his dungeon, the System rewarded Jin-Woo with a Necromancer skill, enabling him to harvest Igris’s shadow and the other entities he previously encountered within the dungeon.
2. The Instant Dungeon Obstacle
Knights And Mages

- First Appearance: Season 1, Episode 11
As Jin-Woo stepped into Igris’s Instant Dungeon, it was knights who formed the initial barrier he encountered in battle. However, the System refused to assist Jin-Woo with certain abilities, leaving him to rely solely on his intelligence and combat prowess against these knights. The knights were tenacious foes, often forcing Jin-Woo into disadvantageous situations. Meanwhile, mages stood at the rear, hurling spells and synchronizing their assaults. After overcoming them, Jin-Woo incorporated them into his own forces. The mages marked the beginning of Jin-Woo’s casters, capable of launching attacks from afar. Later in the series, the mages’ powers shielded Jin-Woo against Kargalgan.
3. Tusk And His High Orcs
An Epitome Of Magic

- First Appearance: Season 2, Episode 5
Initially, Tusk was a formidable shaman among the high orcs and the leader of a challenging dungeon. His extraordinary magical abilities make him an invaluable ally for Jin-Woo’s covert forces. From the get-go, it was evident that Tusk’s magical prowess surpassed ordinary levels, forcing Jin-Woo to mobilize his shadow army against Kargalgan’s high orcs. Furthermore, Kargalgan dominated the battlefields with powerful spells from afar while maintaining a strategic distance from Jin-Woo. His keen intellect made him a formidable adversary as he didn’t charge mindlessly; instead, his command over the High Orcs turned them into an almost unbeatable force.
Initially, Jin-Woo stood out from the rest and, at one point, brought back some deceased high orcs to reinforce his secret army. Later on, he utilized this resurrected force against Kargalgan’s troops. Ultimately, Jin-Woo defeated Kargalgan and revived both him and his army to serve within his shadow army. On the digital realm, Jin-Woo renamed Kargalgan as Tusk. Before Tusk joined, Jin-Woo’s shadow army was formidable; however, with the addition of the high Orc shaman, he filled a void in long-range destruction that hadn’t been completely addressed by Jin-Woo.
4. Iron
The Human Shadow

- First Appearance: Season 2, Episode 2
Prior to joining the Shadow Army, I once knew Kim Chul – a distinguished hunter who appeared to be a worthy leader at first sight. Amongst his peers in the group ensnared within the Red Gate dungeon, he exuded an air of command and experience. Yet, upon encountering genuine peril, particularly during his clash with the elves that resulted in the loss of his subordinates, Kim Chul’s demeanor shifted dramatically. He regarded Jin-Woo, who was still classified as E-rank at that point, as an obstacle to be dealt with.
In their battle against one another, Barca, the elf leader, attempted to seize the opportunity to vanquish Jin-Woo due to his resentment towards him. Yet, Jin-Woo bestowed upon Barca a fresh lease on life, endowing him with a new role within his shadow forces. Kim Chul’s raw power was preserved in Iron, but he also gained remarkable durability and battle tactics.
5. Tank And The Iced Bears
The Red Gate Horror

- First Appearance: Season 2, Episode 2
During an average incursion, a C-rank entryway transformed into a Red Gate. Typically, gates serve for both entrance and exit, but a Red Gate stands apart. A red gate functions as a one-way passage since it seals everyone inside until they conquer the dungeon or succumb to their efforts; there are no reinforcements or external assistance – it’s essentially a fight to the death. In this red gate, Jin-Woo finds himself trapped along with other hunters. Inside, their adversaries consist of Ice Elves and Ice Bears. For Jin-Woo, this situation represents an opportunity for advancement and growth.
To clear the way, Jin-Woo bravely tackled the ice bears alone and swiftly eliminated them. Following the demise of the regular ice bears, their alpha and chief came charging at Jin-Woo but met its end instead. Subsequently, Jin-Woo summoned his shadow and incorporated him and his followers into his shadow militia.
