In the anime “Sakamoto Days”, numerous characters serve as antagonists, yet even minor roles can leave a lasting impact. One such character is Mad Horiguchi, who belongs to the Order. He interacts with Shin and Sakamoto during their visit to the Okutabi Laboratory. Horiguchi maintains communication with Slur and carries out Kashima’s instructions within their group.
From my perspective as a loyal member of Slur’s gang within The Order, it’s no surprise that Mad Horiguchi, being a renowned scientist himself, boasts remarkable abilities. But what makes him truly extraordinary, as I’ve come to learn in the thrilling world of Sakamoto Days, is not just his skills on the surface – there lies a depth and complexity that transforms him into an unyielding adversary for Shin and Sakamoto.
Mad Horiguchi’s Role in Sakamoto Days
How Mad Horiguchi is Introduced
- Meets Shin and Sakamoto in the Okutabi Laboratory
- Manipulates Sakamoto and Shin through electrodes injected into their brains
- Is a member of Shin’s crew in the Order
In the anime “Sakamoto Days”, Mad Horiguchi makes his debut when Sakamoto and Shin travel to Okutabi Laboratory in an effort to locate Asakura, who was once like a father figure to Shin. Initially, neither Shin nor Sakamoto consider Mad Horiguchi a significant adversary, but they quickly discover that he possesses skills far beyond what they initially perceived.
In their encounter, Mad Horiguchi embeds an electrode into Shin’s brain, causing him to speak in reverse. On the other hand, Sakamoto injects something that makes Shin attack Mad Horiguchi instead of himself. Despite recognizing Mad Horiguchi as a formidable adversary, the group manages to counter his manipulation and defeat him with some straightforward punches. Even though he only appears briefly in the Lab Arc, Mad Horiguchi’s unique personality and combat style make him a distinct character that leaves a lasting impression among the multitude of enemies.
What Are Mad Horiguchi’s Abilities?
Breaking Down His Abilities & How They Are Used

- Possesses two main abilities: electrodes, and a strength-enhancing drug
- Makes himself a tough opponent for both Sakamoto and Shin
- Ultimately loses in battle due to the strength-enhancing drug’s limits
Apart from implanting electrodes into enemies’ brains, it’s hard to predict precisely what tools or techniques Mad Horiguchi might employ during combat since he functions as a creative and resourceful mad scientist, always prepared with unconventional methods to secure victory over his adversaries.
In the Lab Arc of Sakamoto Days, Mad Horiguchi showcases two primary skills: the application of electrodes and the use of a strength-boosting drug. The electrodes installed in both Shin and Sakamoto have distinct effects. For Shin, this electrode jumbles his speech, making him talk backwards – giving Mad Horiguchi an advantage because it becomes hard for Shin and Sakamoto to understand each other (though Shin eventually employs his clairvoyance to combat this). As for Sakamoto, the electrode inserted into him causes him to lose control over whom he attacks. For instance, if Sakamoto intends to attack Mad Horiguchi, he might end up targeting Shin instead. Amazingly, Mad Horiguchi can plant these electrodes simply by injecting a syringe directly into his targets’ heads.
As the climax of Mad Horiguchi’s intense battle with Sakamoto and Shin approached, I found myself on the edge of my seat, eager to see how it would unfold. In a desperate bid to turn the tide, Horiguchi pulled out a strength-boosting drug, his last resort. Just like those electrodes he had used earlier, all he needed to do was draw up the drug into a syringe and jab it into his own flesh.
The moment that drug coursed through his veins, Horiguchi underwent a stunning transformation. His size swelled, and his muscles bulged in a way they never had before. This wasn’t some high-tech, futuristic serum; it was a simple concept with an immense impact – multiplying Horiguchi’s strength exponentially, making each of his attacks a potential game-changer for Sakamoto and Shin.
Unfortunately, the effects of this drug were short-lived, lasting only as long as they were injected into him. This gave Horiguchi a brief window to capitalize on his newfound power, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough. In the end, he met his match against Sakamoto and Shin, defeated in an epic showdown that left me breathless.
Sakamoto Days is available to stream now on Netflix.
