Take for instance, Game of Thrones without Westeros or Arrow without Star City. In Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower series, the Gunslinger Roland Deschain traverses numerous worlds. However, there exists one central setting that the story’s heroes frequently revisit, and a crucial element to any adaptation: Mid-World.
Among numerous realms or dimensions, Mid-World stands out as a legendary one where Roland Deschain originates. This world witnessed the rise and fall of the kingdom called Gilead, served as the stage for Blaine the Mono’s travel and lethal games with Roland and his companions, and was the setting for Roland’s first taste of love and heartbreak in his younger days. The events that propel Roland into various time periods within our world, or more specifically New York City, throughout the series all stem from Mid-World. Therefore, comprehending the dynamics of Mid-World becomes crucial for any future live-action adaptations.
Mid-World, Explained
In my tale, I’m not referring to a particular geographical location, but rather the realm once called the Kingdom of All-World, or “All World That Was,” during the era of Arthur Eld, the pioneer who established Gilead and the gunslingers. This vast Mid-World is divided into three primary territories: In-World, Mid-World, and End-World. Born and bred within In-World, which serves as the heartland of the ancient Kingdom of All-World, I, Roland Deschain, reside.
In-World encompassed numerous baronies, including New Canaan and Gilead, which was often referred to as the heart of civilization “before the world progressed.” This realm was famously civilized that when figures like John Farson seized power, disorder took over, leaving Roland as the sole surviving member of a once-thriving kingdom. Later on, In-World became notorious for its political conflicts, deceit, and treachery. The collapse of Gilead had far-reaching consequences that would impact neighboring regions for years to come, a fact that Roland would frequently encounter in his later life journeys.
Stepping into Mid-World, one finds oneself amidst relics of a past world flourishing. A seemingly deserted town called River Crossing conceals its elderly inhabitants, guardians of the last blooming oasis in Mid-World, reminiscing about the days of the gunslingers. On the other hand, Lud, a city scarred by war, is under the control of the malicious Tick Tock Man amidst an internal conflict. These locations represent the remaining fragments of civilization, sandwiched between the outposts of the Great Old Ones and the decaying In-World. The desolate wasteland known as the Wastelands serves as the final journey for many in Mid-World. Here, fearsome beasts and malevolent forces wander through energy-decimated landscapes, safely traversed only on automated monorails such as Blaine the Mono.
Ultimately, there exists a realm named End-World, a terrifying landscape that lies between the rest of existence and the Dark Tower‘s core. The Dark Tower, the centerpoint of all realities, is overseen by locations such as Thunderclap, where Callas and Castle Discordia are situated, overlooking Fedic. These places also harbor Devor-Toi, the dwelling place of the Breakers – potent psychics who have been kidnapped by the Crimson King’s agents to aid in dismantling the energy beams sustaining the Dark Tower. As one journeys through Empathica’s tranquil plains, only the enchanting Can’-Ka No Rey – a field of endless roses surrounding the Dark Tower itself – remains.
Mid-World in The Dark Tower Series
Engaging with these characters, particularly Roland and his group, allows one to connect not just with them, but also with the universe they inhabit, which is rich in its distinct mythology. In this realm, it’s Randall Flagg, or the Man in Black, who thrives and emerges as a formidable adversary for Roland Deschain. Mid-World is a place that combines magic, fantasy, and science fiction, seamlessly blending them into both familiar and strange manifestations that evoke the chilling imagery Stephen King is famous for.
In order for acclaimed director Mike Flanagan to successfully handle this ambitious undertaking, the realm of Mid-World should be both recognizable and foreign to the audience. The narrative initiates with a western ambiance, as depicted by the expansive desert where the gunslinger pursued the man in black. However, the landscape evolves and broadens, showcasing grotesque creatures on shorelines dotted with portals to other realms, mystical circles where ancient demons converse, and quaint settlements preserving the customs and wisdom Roland was raised on before the world “progressed.” It is crucial that viewers can immerse themselves in the intricate and expansive universe of Mid-World while recognizing aspects of their own world mirrored in the shattered reflection that seems to define Mid-World. This is why Mid-World plays such a significant role in the Dark Tower tale when this live-action series finally comes to fruition.
