Without a shadow of a doubt, One Piece chapter 1138 solidified Elbaf as one of Eiichiro Oda’s finest arcs, and undeniably boasted the most impressive beginning to any arc across the entire series. In this specific chapter, Oda delved into the Harley texts – a book that carries deep significance in the Giants’ land – further cementing Elbaf as a standout arc in the One Piece saga.
The first reference to the Harley texts was made by Jarul, and more recently, Oda has shared significant details from the Harley through Nico Robin, an archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates. In One Piece chapter 1138, Robin deciphered the entire Harley text, leaving fans astounded by the revelations so far.
What Harley Text Has To Say About The First World

- A Massive War Was Fought
- The Sun God Nika Appeared
Based on what Harley states and the ancient mural by the Giants, it’s clear that the three realms of One Piece have been uncovered. The First World is believed to be extremely old, predating even the Void Century as mentioned in the narrative. However, its precise timeline remains uncertain. If events follow a cycle, then the First World could potentially date back around 1600 years, considering that the Void Century occurred 800 years ago.
In the era of the First World within the One Piece universe, it seems the landscape was quite advanced. Skyscrapers, power stations, factories were prevalent, suggesting a vast world with multiple continents. Interestingly, the world hadn’t been submerged at this point. The presence of humans in the murals, who were referred to as slaves in Harle texts, indicates that humanity existed during this time. It’s speculated that fires or flames swept through the land during this period. This could mean literal fires consuming the world, or it might symbolize a powerful energy source known as the Mother Flame being discovered. Given Vegapunk’s explanation that One Piece’s world once had its own sun, which was incredibly potent and mind-blowing, this could be referring to such an ancient power source.
Our world has already been destroyed twice, according to the Harley! — Jarul
The Harley implies that people from this era succumbed to their selfishness and covetousness, reaching for the prohibited sun. This out-of-bounds sun might have been the Mother Flame or the ultimate result of the Mother Flame that Vegapunk aspired to produce. In this period, humanity amassed tremendous power and rose significantly in influence. It seems plausible that slavery expanded during this time as a means to generate more Motherflame, an idea hinted at within the text.

In a time of hardship, the oppressed people fervently yearned for liberation and it seemed as if the solar deity intervened. This is significant because Vegapunk noted in the Egghead arc that the desires of people give birth to Devil Fruits. Two scenarios could unfold here. The first scenario suggests that the aspirations of these slaves may have sparked the creation of this Devil Fruit through some connection with the Sun, and subsequently someone ingested this fruit. The second scenario posits that the Sun God materialized from somewhere, possibly even another celestial body, much like the Winged races in the One Piece world. In some manner or form, the Sun God manifested to alleviate the suffering of these oppressed individuals.
The origin of this Sun Deity remains unclear according to the Harley manuscripts. What followers do understand, however, is that he emerged in response to the pleas of the oppressed. This development was met with disapproval by world rulers, a point Jarul had earlier mentioned. Interestingly, the texts suggest that the Earth God grew angry due to this new deity’s emergence and joined forces with the Infernal Serpent of Karma. Together, they brought about the destruction of the world, leaving it veiled in death and darkness. This scenario implies that if Imu existed during this era, they may have been the Earth God.
This is explained because Jarul has already made it clear that those with power are afraid of Sun God Nika’s arrival, and it’s evident that it was Earth God who became angry instead. The identity of the Serpent being referred to is yet unknown. However, what viewers recall is that this serpent was previously mentioned by Dorry and Brogy. As they stated in the Little Garden Arc of the series, these characters claimed they can penetrate anything except for this Serpent, a fact they had mentioned earlier on in the series.
The Destruction Of The World
The One Piece World Was Engulfed In Darkness
In their alliance, it seemed inevitable that the world would perish. It strongly suggests that Nika suffered defeat in this encounter, failing to prevent such destruction. Since then, the world has been shrouded in darkness and yet to witness a new day. The specifics of Nika’s demise remain uncertain. However, what is evident is that Nika engaged these two monstrous beings in battle and ultimately met his end. The story concludes with ‘they would never meet again’, indicating an everlasting parting, possibly brought about by death, implying that Nika’s vision of a sunlit world may have been unattainable, leaving the people yearning for better days.
Over the course of time, I’ve noticed that people are left puzzled about the Earth God and the Serpent of Infernal Flames. To this day, these enigmatic beings continue to baffle us. It’s plausible that the Earth God is none other than Imu, who has remained immortal, playing a pivotal role in the Void Century and the return of Nika. Alternatively, it could be that the Earth God was reborn like Nika, leading to Saint Nerona Imu assuming this role. The identity of the Serpent remains unclear for now, but I suspect we’ll learn more about it soon enough.

Following that, the world progressed to the Second World, a realm where Joy Boy was born. It is well-known among fans that the Twenty Kings banded together to combat the Ancient Kingdom, which some believe could be a remnant of the First World due to its advanced technology. Readers eagerly anticipate Oda providing additional details about the First World in the near future, but the rich history of Elbaf has already left many astounded. Fans are excited for more intriguing lore from Oda as this arc unfolds.
