In Solo Leveling’s Jeju Island Arc, an unstoppable swarm deep beneath the ruined landscape of the island poses a huge threat to South Korea and its neighboring countries. A once-thriving land, Jeju Island falls into the hands of a seemingly endless number of monstrous creatures led by a terrifying queen. All hopes now rest on the coalition of S-rank hunters from South Korea and Japan who are determined to succeed at all costs.
For years, Jeju Island has seen the countless deaths of South Korea’s strongest hunters who try to eliminate the relentless swarm of mutant ants that dominate the land. At the core of this unstoppable swarm lies a terrifying ruler—the Ant Queen, a towering monstrosity who wants nothing but the best for her children. As Solo Leveling’s Jeju Island Arc rages on, the Ant Queen is one of the determining factors of whether the hunters fail or succeed.
Jeju Island’s Ant Queen, Explained
What Exactly Is the Ant Queen?

Who would’ve thought that monstrous ants could push South Korea’s strongest hunters into the corner? While insect-type magical beasts may look like they’re less superior to others, their ability to multiply at a rapid rate makes them a force to be reckoned with. For these ants, it’s a game of numbers—the more they are, the more they can dominate, and the bigger the problem they can become for the hunters. As the ants increase in numbers and mutate over the years, South Korea lacks the manpower to finish them off.
The Ant Queen plays a significant role in this dilemma, as she is the sole progenitor of the deadly mutants. She is responsible for the breeding of ants that terrorize Jeju Island, the reproductive force behind the countless number of ants. She stands at the core of the ants’ ecosystem, as she’s the only one who can maintain the ant army. Although the Ant Queen remains hidden deep within the island, her presence is an essential part of the Jeju Island disaster that has continued to overwhelm South Korea for years.
What Is the Ant Queen’s Objective?

On top of expanding the colony, the Ant Queen seeks to sustain her children, ensuring their absolute dominance not just in Jeju Island but possibly across the world. She wants her children to consume anything there is to consume to fuel the relentless growth of the colony. The more resources her children can gather, the stronger the colony becomes, as the Ant Queen continues her never-ending cycle of birthing mutated ants. Knowing that their strength lies in their numbers, the Ant Queen’s overall objective is to expand without limitation.
“For the sake of our kingdom, make the enemies who stand in our way tremble in fear.”—Ant Queen
In the Jeju Island Arc, the Ant Queen decides to abandon the island as their food source runs low; they can’t support their colony anymore. Upon seeing her children resort to cannibalism, the Ant Queen comes up with a brilliant idea to breed a strong soldier that is capable of not just leading their kingdom but also killing enemies that stand in their way. Thus, the birth of the Black Ant, otherwise known as the Ant King, who later claims the lives of some of the members of the Jeju Island party organized by South Korea and Japan.
The Ant Queen’s Abilities
How Strong Is the Ant Queen?

The Ant Queen may not be as strong as the Black Ant, but she is still the boss of an S-rank gate, which tells a lot about her strength. She might be weaker than her powerful offspring, but she is far more dangerous than any mutated ant in her colony. During her encounter with the S-rank hunters from South Korea, the Ant Queen was able to pierce through the shield of Ma Dongwook, the S-rank tanker of the group. Her immense strength combined with her immense durability allows her to engage with the S-rank hunters for an extended period before they can take her down.
Ability to Give Birth

The main strength of the Ant Queen lies in her capacity to reproduce rapidly. She gives birth to numerous ants, and each new generation becomes increasingly powerful. This rapid reproduction keeps her colony strong and populous, as the numbers never dwindle. Crucially, the Ant Queen can produce offspring similar to the Ant King, which are particularly potent.
Poison Release
As expected of an insect-type monster, the Ant Queen can use poison to kill her enemies. During the Jeju Island raid, the Ant Queen manages to harm Baek Yoonho and Ma Dongwook with a massive dose of her purple poison, potent enough to break through their armor.
“Consume all there is to consume.”—Ant Queen
In the aftermath of the raid, Sung Jin-Woo extracts the Ant Queen’s shadow, but her strength turns out much weaker than expected. He later cancels the skill after learning from Beru that the Ant Queen is not physically strong and her ability to give birth to more ants would not be possible in shadow form.
While the Ant Queen is not an active combatant and considerably weaker than other S-rank dungeon bosses in Solo Leveling, she is still the root of the disaster on Jeju Island. Her ability to reproduce makes her a high-priority target that the hunters need to eliminate before the situation gets out of hand. Her demise, however, proves that even the most overwhelming forces can be defeated at their source.
