As a longtime fan of DC comics and video games, I wholeheartedly agree that it’s high time for the DC universe to expand beyond the Arkhamverse. While I hold the Arkham games in high regard, their dominance has overshadowed other potential gems in the DC universe. It’s like Batman is the Michael Jordan of DC games, and we’re all just waiting for LeBron (or any other superhero) to step up and show us what they can do.
Thanks to “Batman: Arkham Shadow” and its rich storyline and character growth within the Arkham universe, the future success of the “Arkham” series is looking very promising. With “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” coming to a close, it wouldn’t be shocking if Rocksteady decided to return to developing single-player Batman games – a direction they might have pursued instead of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”. Hopefully, this means they can move beyond the multiversal alien invasion that has taken over the present day in the Arkhamverse and continue to innovate. However, the popularity of the Arkham universe doesn’t mean that ideas for games outside of it should be dismissed.
Gotham Knights didn’t quite live up to its potential as an innovative DC game due to its inability to fully separate the Bat Family from Batman’s influence and deliver a less-than-impressive Court of Owls narrative. As James Gunn’s DCU is currently prospering, it remains unclear if there are plans for DCU-themed games, but such a direction could be intriguing. Regardless, the DC mythos deserves more than just the Arkhamverse when it comes to compelling and lasting video game franchises.
DC Games Basically Depend on the Familiarity of Batman’s Arkhamverse
Warner Bros.’ open declaration that Batman is their main focus in the gaming world implies that more Arkham games are either being developed or considered, given the popularity of these games due to their familiarity. While creating a new continuity might lack the comforting familiarity, it could offer something fresh if it successfully resonates with audiences and ventures beyond the iconic elements or paths previously explored in the Arkhamverse.
The game titled “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” seems to damage much of the positive reputation that the “Arkham” series had, as it intentionally strays or revises elements from its previous lore and events. However, given the immense influence that games like “Batman: Arkham Asylum”, “Batman: Arkham City”, “Batman: Arkham Origins”, and “Batman: Arkham Knight” have had, fans might easily overlook “Suicide Squad’s” errors if Rocksteady were to announce a new entry in the “Arkham” series.
Beyond doubt, Warner Bros. is well aware that Batman and the Arkhamverse are their most successful franchises. Introducing a brand-new Batman universe might seem appealing, but it would inevitably face criticism due to its similarities with the Arkhamverse’s 15-year-old franchise, making any new endeavor feel like an imitation rather than an original creation.
New Video Game Universes are the Heroes That DC Needs as Well as What It Deserves
In simpler terms, it might be beneficial for DC video games to introduce a fresh universe without Batman’s influence. The upcoming Monolith’s “Wonder Woman” game, though delayed, could breathe new life into DC lore by distancing itself from the Arkhamverse and its associated baggage. Similarly, a potential “Injustice 3” and a modern AAA Superman game (regardless of Arkhamverse ties) could reinvigorate interest in DC among fans more than ever before.
Creating a studio that masterfully develops the Superman narrative could potentially unseat Batman as the leading DC character in standalone games, and there are several other popular DC heroes who also warrant individual game titles. It’s surprising that DC hasn’t yet ventured into mobile deck-building or 6v6 hero shooter genres similar to “Marvel Snap” and “Marvel Rivals.” If DC were to enter these markets, they might excel. However, launching a new DC franchise would require significant dedication to ensure its success. Having studios focus on crafting compelling original stories for various characters could offer a more rewarding experience and provide the Arkhamverse with much-needed competition.
