As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of disheartened nostalgia hearing about the demise of Humanoid Origin and Inflexion Games. Casey Hudson, a name synonymous with some of the most memorable gaming experiences in the Mass Effect universe, has once again found himself on the losing end of an industry that is as unpredictable as it is competitive.
Casey Hudson, famously recognized as the director of the Mass Effect trilogy, parted ways with BioWare in 2021 to establish a fresh studio named Humanoid Origin. However, regrettably, Hudson revealed today that the studio will be closing its doors due to insufficient funding.
Earlier today, it was announced on our LinkedIn page that Humanoid Origin is closing down. Regrettably, despite our attempts to protect the studio from wider issues within the industry, an unforeseen lack of financial resources forced us into this decision and we were unable to continue running the business.
We’re deeply disappointed that we won’t finish creating our innovative sci-fi universe. Right now, our priority is ensuring our team is well taken care of during this transition to new jobs. Throughout our collaboration, the team made remarkable strides and proved that a fun and creative environment can lead to outstanding work. We appreciate their skills, bravery, and camaraderie.
A Troubling Time For Former BioWare Developers
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that it isn’t just Hudson’s Humanoid Origin grappling with challenges. Just recently, Inflexion Games, the minds behind Nightingale, had to make some tough decisions and let go of some team members due to layoffs. Aaryn Flynn, the CEO of Inflexion Games, used to be the head honcho at BioWare. Despite the hardship, he emphasized that these layoffs were essential for the survival of our studio.
According to their LinkedIn post, Humanoid Origin, a studio emphasizing creative freedom and independence, boasts around 72 employees. Their work ethos suggests that such an environment fosters superior, innovative games. Although specifics about their upcoming, unannounced title remain scarce, their website hints at a multi-platform AAA game set in a fresh sci-fi universe, emphasizing character-driven narratives. As late as May of this year, they were actively seeking new talent.
2021 wasn’t Hudson’s initial departure from BioWare; instead, he parted ways with the studio back on August 7th, 2014. Later, in 2015, he moved to Microsoft Studios as a creative director. He re-joined BioWare in 2017, taking over Flynn’s role as studio general manager, but then left again four years later.
Currently, BioWare has unveiled “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” and continues to develop the subsequent installment of the “Mass Effect” series. Additionally, a television program set within the “Mass Effect” universe is also under production.
