February’s Steam Next Fest showcased many upcoming games, but few were as intense as the trailer for Dive or Die: Children of Rain. Created by a small, two-person indie team in Paris, this 2D roguelite draws inspiration from Lovecraftian horror. Players must repeatedly dive into the dangerous Abyssal Pool each day, risking everything for a small chance of surviving an approaching catastrophe.

Coming out in the second quarter of this year, Dive or Die: Children of Rain plunges players into a frightening world inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. A constant threat looms as exposure to the Black Rain drives people insane. Players will confront terrifying creatures and mysteries in an attempt to stop the Rainmaker from unleashing devastating floods and ending civilization.

Dive or Die Blends Lovecraftian Lore With Horror & Time Pressure

Guided by Jack, players must lead humanity’s final hope for survival. This involves venturing into the dangerous Abyssal pool to gather vital resources while facing terrifying creatures. Every dive is a race against time, as you carefully manage oxygen and sanity, all while a 40-day countdown to the arrival of the Rainmaker presses on.

The game essentially offers two different ways to play, and a large part of it – around 70 to 80% – focuses on underwater exploration. Players dive deep to collect valuable items, but they have to manage their oxygen and watch out for dangerous creatures. Dying is common, so you’ll constantly be weighing the risks against the potential rewards of gathering more resources. Is it worth risking everything to get just a little bit more?

Beyond combat, the game focuses on building and protecting your settlement. As you attract new villagers – whether to replace those lost or simply to grow your community – you’ll assign them jobs to ensure everyone’s survival. Making tough choices for the benefit of the whole group adds to the challenge and tension.

Good news for players: you won’t have to wait long for this game! It’s nearly finished and will be released in the second quarter of this year.
