Magic is a common feature in role-playing games, often used alongside traditional hand-to-hand combat. Many Final Fantasy games, for instance, include characters who can cast spells like fire, wind, or ice to defeat enemies. While most games blend magic with other combat styles, Hogwarts Legacy is a recent example of a game focused primarily on magic, and it’s particularly popular with Harry Potter fans.
Both Wizard of Legend and its sequel are enjoyable, smaller-scale roguelike games. If you love games focused entirely on magic, these are great upcoming titles to add to your wishlist. Let’s hope they’re released soon!
Never Grave: The Witch And The Curse
A Witch’s Odyssey
- Developer: Frontside 180
- Publisher: Pocketpair Publishing
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox
Never Grave: The Witch and the Curse is a “roguevania” – a game that blends the random challenges of roguelikes with the exploration and ability upgrades of Metroidvania games. You play as a young witch who mainly fights with spells, though melee attacks also seem to be an option. The game’s art style is similar to Hollow Knight, featuring a beautiful, hand-drawn look.
What’s really unique is that players can take over defeated enemies by throwing their hat on them – it’s similar to Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey, but with a darker twist. The game is expected to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 first. There’s no current information about a release on Nintendo Switch or Xbox, as those pages aren’t available yet.
Spellcasters Chronicles
A Surprise Announcement
- Developer: Quantic Dream SA
- Publisher: Quantic Dream SA
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC
One of the biggest surprises this year is the announcement of Spellcasters Chronicles, a new game being created by a team spun off from Quantic Dream – the studio famous for story-driven adventure games like Detroit: Become Human. The game appears to blend magical combat with the team-based action of MOBAs and shooter games, pitting teams of three against each other in arena battles.
In Spellcasters Chronicles, players can use spells and also build decks of monsters to summon. The game will be free to play, and a beta version is expected to release before the end of 2025—it’ll be exciting to see what the developers have created!
Timespinner 2: Unwoven Dream
An Unexpected Sequel
- Developer: Lunar Ray Games
- Publisher: Lunar Ray Games
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Linux
Released in 2018, Timespinner is a fantastic Metroidvania that doesn’t get enough attention. What sets it apart is its unique combat system: players collect magical orbs that act as spells, and can combine any two orbs to create powerful combos, making battles much more interesting than in many other games of the genre.
I’ve been checking out gameplay for Timespinner 2: Unwoven Dream, and it looks like the combat is staying true to the first game, which is awesome! They’re also bringing back those magical familiars you can summon – I loved having those guys help me out in the original, both in fights and just getting around the map.
UnderMire
Dual-Wielding With Friends
- Developer: Table Knight Games
- Publisher: Table Knight Games
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC
UnderMire is a visually impressive game where you cast spells, especially if you enjoy using two weapons at once. You’ll learn new spells, discover spellbooks, and use helpful gadgets during battles. A crafting system will also be available, allowing you to create even more magical tools and items.
As a roguelike game, the way players will advance isn’t yet clear, but a fun feature to anticipate is the cooperative mode. You can play with up to three other people on a single run, much like the popular magical roguelike, Wizard of Legend.
Witchbrook
A School For Mages
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X
Witchbrook offers a relaxed and cozy take on witchcraft compared to many other games in the genre. It’s primarily a life simulation where you make friends and go to classes at a magical school – think of it like a pixelated version of Hogwarts, but with a focus on everyday life.
This new game features cooperative play for up to four players, though the specifics are still unclear, as it doesn’t seem to center around fighting. If you enjoy games like Stardew Valley and are looking for something similar, Witchbrook could be a great option.
Wizard Cats
Abra Ca-Meow!
- Developer: BigFrogg Studios
- Publisher: BigFrogg Studios
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC
Wizard Cats is a charming top-down roguelike game with a unique look – its tile-based design almost makes it feel like a strategy game. Players take on the role of a cat and gain magical abilities by collecting and crafting runes, which they can upgrade using a skill tree during each playthrough.
This game promises a huge variety of skills players can create, ranging from ice-based attacks to powerful lightning strikes. Fans of games like Borderlands, known for their massive number of weapons, might find this especially exciting. It makes you wonder just how many different types of fire spells the game will ultimately offer – it’s definitely something to look forward to seeing!
YAPYAP
Magical Mischief
- Developer: Maison Bap
- Publisher: Maison Bap
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC
YAPYAP is a new game aiming to be as hilariously chaotic as titles like GOAT Simulator, and it’s designed for cooperative play. Up to six players can team up to explore a wizard’s tower that changes its layout with each new game.
As you play, you’ll discover simple spells, including fire magic, and a big part of the enjoyment comes from combining those spells with friends. Think of the iconic scene with Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, but imagine a darker, more dangerous setting—a creepy tower full of scary monsters and demons trying to defeat him. That’s essentially what YAPYAP is all about.
