Upcoming Games Where You Can Fly

Most gamers agree that flying is one of the coolest things to do in video games. Whether it’s on a magical creature, in a plane, with a special device, or through superpowers, the experience is always exciting and memorable. When combined with today’s amazing graphics, flying lets you feel the thrill of soaring through the air or battling from above.

Despite this, there’s still a lot of room for innovation, as truly free-form flight isn’t common in games even now. Luckily, we’re starting to see more major, high-budget games incorporate flying into their gameplay, and several exciting titles are promising impressive aerial experiences. Here’s a look at some of the most anticipated upcoming games that are highlighting flight as a key feature.

Upcoming smaller titles with a focus on flying:

  • Infinitesimals – Play as a tiny alien who pilots sci-fi vehicles like spaceships and uses a jetpack for flying, gliding, and evading.
  • Echoes of Elysium – Build and fly modular airships, take them into combat, and explore the vast world individually using handcrafted wings and other flight gear.
  • Undefeated: Genesis – Described as the ultimate superhero adventure, featuring free flight and other extraordinary powers for non-stop action that could put Superman to shame.
  • For the Stars – A classic sci-fi action and base-building game featuring customizable spacecraft built for combat, exploration, and resource gathering.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Flying Vehicles Like Planes, Helicopters, and More

I’m so hyped for Grand Theft Auto 6, and it sounds like flying is definitely coming back – which is awesome! From what I’ve heard, this GTA is going to be huge and incredibly detailed, so we can expect all sorts of aircraft, from small planes to helicopters, and maybe even some new ways to get around. Plus, I’m really hoping to see some amazing parachute jumps just like in GTA 5!

With Vice City looking so beautiful and realistic, players who love flying will have a fantastic experience. It will be interesting to see how much flying will be a part of the new GTA Online in GTA 6, and if the developers will bring back popular, fast-paced flying vehicles like the Oppressor.

The Duskbloods

Vampiric Airborne Superpowers and Steampunk Flying Gear

After including flight in both Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, FromSoftware is continuing to develop aerial movement in their next game, The Duskbloods. Currently confirmed as a Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods is an action title set in a new gothic world with a steampunk style. Players will control vampiric heroes, each possessing distinct powers and abilities.

The first trailer for The Duskbloods suggests players will have several ways to get around, including magical abilities like gliding, and cool steampunk technology like jetpack-powered suits. These movement options will probably also be useful in battles, making the game even more thrilling.

Crimson Desert

Rideable Dragons and Magical Aerial Abilities

Crimson Desert is shaping up to be a highly anticipated open-world action RPG, and it appears the developers took a remarkably free and creative approach during its creation – which could make it truly stand out. They’ve already demonstrated a diverse set of combat moves and ways to get around, including several thrilling methods for flying throughout the world of Pywel.

In Crimson Desert, players controlling Kliff will be able to ride not only horses, but also enormous dragons as powerful flying vehicles in combat. He also has the ability to float in the air, likely using a magical cloak, though this probably won’t be available right away. Fans of Crimson Desert will be excited by all the different ways to play and explore.

Star Citizen

Lots, Lots of Spaceships and Hovering Vehicles

For fans of spaceships, Star Citizen is becoming the ultimate sci-fi space game, offering a vast, interconnected universe to explore. Players can land on numerous planets, visit futuristic cities, and participate in huge aerial battles. However, this is all contingent on Cloud Imperium Games finally releasing the complete game or, at the very least, delivering its single-player component, Squadron 42, which is currently planned for release in 2026 (though that date has shifted in the past).

Even with ongoing development setbacks, Star Citizen is still a remarkably ambitious game. Players who’ve been following it for years continue to appreciate the developers’ dedication to creating an incredibly detailed and expansive space experience. There’s really nothing else like it; Star Citizen already features over 250 different ships and vehicles to explore its massive universe.

Pragmata

Advanced Spacesuit With Powerful Thrusters

Following the impressive initial trailers, it seems like Pragmata has evolved its approach, though its core features are still present. The game is still anticipated to heavily feature flight, with players controlling Hugh Williams, an astronaut wearing a high-tech suit with strong thrusters. From what Capcom has revealed, this suit enables Hugh to hover, quickly dash, and dodge attacks while both fighting and exploring.

It’s still unknown exactly how much players will be able to fly in Pragmata, or if the game will have large enough areas to really take advantage of the spacesuit. We hope the early hints about exploring the Moon are still true, allowing players to walk – and maybe even fly – on its surface.

Light No Fire

Flying Mounts Including Dragons and Giant Birds

Light No Fire is looking like it will be a massive open-world game, letting players explore a planet as large as Earth without loading screens. Because the world is so huge, being able to quickly travel around is important, and it seems Light No Fire will offer plenty of ways to do just that.

The developers of Light No Fire clearly want players to focus on exploring their world, and they’ve made travel a key part of the game. You’ll be able to ride a variety of creatures, including impressive dragons and enormous birds. As a game designed for playing with friends, Light No Fire aims to create memorable experiences, like seeing multiple dragon riders flying together – a sight that’s pretty rare in gaming.

ARK 2

Bonding With Flying Prehistoric Species

The original ARK: Survival Evolved always featured dinosaurs and the ability to ride and bond with them. Now, ARK 2 is building on that popular foundation. Players can look forward to even more dinosaur taming, including flying creatures like Pteranodons, Wyverns, and Quetzals, plus exciting aerial battles and exploration.

Considering how much ARK 2 is aiming to achieve – including new features like creature AI that responds to your senses and a more detailed building system – it’s understandable that the game is taking time to develop. Plus, with upgraded graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5, flying around the expansive world of ARK 2 promises to be more immersive and satisfying than ever before.

Iron Man

Hope Stark Solved the Icing Problem

  • Release Date: TBA
  • Developer: EA Motive Studio
  • Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S

Okay, so Motive Studio is working on an Iron Man game – the name isn’t set yet – and from the early concept art, it looks amazing. What’s really got me hyped is the promise of totally free-form flight. Seriously, an Iron Man game has to let you soar through the sky in that suit at insane speeds as Tony Stark, and it sounds like this one will deliver!

We haven’t heard much about Motive’s Iron Man game lately, but they confirmed in May that it’s still in development. Considering Motive created impressive flying mechanics in games like Star Wars: Squadrons and the Dead Space Remake, this Marvel project appears to be in good hands.
