The team at Ghost Story Games recently provided an update on their upcoming game, Judas. They explained how Judas is shaping up and highlighted the ways it will be different from their previous work on BioShock.
Ken Levine, known for creating the BioShock series, is now directing a new game called Judas. Ever since Judas was announced, BioShock fans have been excited for his next project, as it’s been nearly a decade since his last game release. While players can expect the same creative touch they love from Levine, Judas will also feature some major differences from the BioShock games.
Bioshock Creator and Ghost Story Games Devs Talk Judas
The development team recently shared an update on their new game, Judas. Unlike previous BioShock titles which focused on strong relationships – like the bond between the Big Daddy and Little Sister, or Booker and Elizabeth – Judas centers around a dynamic, evolving story. Lead narrative designer Drew Mitchell explained that the game’s title itself hints at a key difference: players will experience the story through the eyes of Judas, a character deeply connected to the events unfolding. While Booker and Jack in past BioShock games were newcomers to a strange world, mirroring the player’s initial experience, Judas is a long-time resident of the Mayflower spaceship and a fully developed character whose actions drive the plot forward.
The game’s setting is a key departure from previous titles. Unlike the static cities of Rapture and Columbia in BioShock, the Mayflower is a spaceship that has evolved over generations. Art director Nathan Phail-Liff explains the ship began with a functional, standard design, but internal conflicts have led to significant changes over time. These changes will be visible throughout the ship, allowing players to piece together its history simply by exploring.
The game Judas features a constantly changing story, characters, and world, with clear differences between various groups. These differences are shown through details like the varying quality of living spaces – the VIP Pilgrim Quarters are luxurious with high ceilings and large windows, while the Violator Quarters are dark and depressing, located deep within the ship. Instead of building all of this by hand, the developers created a system that essentially designs the world itself, using a set of rules they’re confident in. This approach is intended to make the game world feel more realistic and responsive than anything they’ve created before.
Although many details about Judas are still unknown, the developers have drawn comparisons to BioShock while also highlighting key differences. Ken Levine previously explained that BioShock felt linear – like “a long corridor with trigger points” that moved the story forward. Judas, on the other hand, aims to be more open-ended and give players greater control over the experience. While both games are first-person shooters, Judas will also incorporate roguelike features, meaning each playthrough will be unique and impact both the main character, Judas, and the environment around her.
The game Judas will be released later than originally planned – it was expected in March 2025, but a new release date hasn’t been announced yet. While the delay is disappointing, development is going well and the team is happy with the progress they’ve made. It will likely be some time before players can experience the new game from Ken Levine.
