The next few years look amazing for open-world games, and it’s not just about the highly anticipated GTA 6. Several long-awaited, ambitious games are finally launching. While the basic open-world experience remains familiar, each new major title is trying to offer something unique to capture players’ attention with innovative ideas and gameplay.
I’m really excited about the upcoming games, and it’s not always about huge, totally new ideas. Sometimes it’s just taking what works from other games and adding a little something extra to make things fresh. I’ve been checking out what’s expected in 2026, and I want to share some of the most interesting ones – the ones that seem like they’re really bringing something new to the open-world experience that we haven’t seen before.
Grand Theft Auto 6
Previously Unseen Scale and Level of Detail
Right now, it’s hard to say exactly how Grand Theft Auto 6 will stand out from other open-world games, even though players have a general idea of the gameplay. However, we can be sure it will be unlike anything players have experienced before – a game of enormous scale with incredible detail, built with a huge amount of funding and effort.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be a massive release, potentially impacting industries beyond gaming. It’s expected to be the biggest entertainment launch in years, and no other major releases are attempting to compete with it. Hopefully, the game lives up to the enormous anticipation and the long wait has been worthwhile.
The Blood of Dawnwalker
Time-Based Layer Adds to Tense Choice-Driven Nature
People are already saying The Blood of Dawnwalker feels like the beginning of a new open-world RPG series in the style of The Witcher. It shares similarities in its world-building, focus on the supernatural, investigative gameplay, and how combat works. But The Blood of Dawnwalker also has unique features that should make it stand out as its own game.
In this game, you play as a character who is both human and vampire, which creates a unique gameplay experience that changes depending on the time of day. This also means every quest can be approached in two different ways, depending on which form you choose. Adding to the challenge, The Blood of Dawnwalker has a time limit – major quests and decisions move the clock forward, limiting how much you can do in a single playthrough. This could make the game very replayable, but it’s a risk, as some players might not enjoy the time pressure. Hopefully, the developers create a compelling story where your choices truly matter.
Light No Fire
Earth-Sized Shared World on a Scale Never Attempted Before
The biggest draw of Light No Fire is its incredibly large open world – the developers say it’s the size of Earth and unlike anything seen before in a game that combines survival, adventure, and RPG elements. What’s really exciting is that, even though the world is created using procedural generation, the studio also plans to include a compelling story and detailed history, giving players a sense of purpose and making the game feel meaningful rather than empty.
After the impressive updates to No Man’s Sky, Hello Games appears well-prepared to apply what they’ve learned over the past few years to their new project. With their established reputation and a fascinating idea, Light No Fire is quickly becoming one of the most eagerly awaited open-world games.
Crimson Desert
Seemingly Taking Inspiration From Literally Everything
Initially, Crimson Desert looked like a typical open-world RPG, similar to games like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim. However, the developers surprised everyone by combining elements from numerous open-world games over the last ten years in a really unique way. This creates an intriguing mix of features and mechanics, leaving players wondering how well it will all come together and if there might be too much for players to handle.
The game seems to have broad appeal, and could become a popular open-world action-RPG for a long time. Based on what’s been revealed, there appears to be plenty of content to keep players engaged for weeks or even months. Hopefully, it will become a major hit and one of the best new games next year.
The Duskbloods
Blending Innovative PvPvE With Rich Storytelling
Beyond being the next exciting project from FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki, details about The Duskbloods remain scarce. The developers have hinted at a unique mix of player-versus-player and player-versus-environment gameplay, combined with a compelling, character-driven story. It appears to be positioned somewhere between the feel of the original Elden Ring and the ideas behind Nightreign, essentially imagining Nightreign in a brand-new setting without the time constraints, and with a story that could be among the studio’s best – a very appealing prospect.
Although Nightreign did well for the studio and appealed to many players, a lot of fans are hoping for a game more in line with classic FromSoftware titles, and The Duskbloods appears to be exactly that. The only thing that might hold some players back from buying it immediately is that it’s launching as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
Star Citizen
Promise of Realistically Simulated Universe
After years of development, Star Citizen is gradually coming together. The single-player story campaign, Squadron 42, is now expected to launch in 2026. While it’s unclear when the full game will move beyond its early alpha stage, creating such a detailed and realistic universe takes significant time. There’s really nothing else quite like what Cloud Imperium Games is attempting.
Star Citizen is well-known for its incredibly long development process, often becoming the butt of jokes and memes. Despite this, players have been able to explore a continuously expanding version of the game’s universe since 2016, and each new update keeps fans excited about its potential. Currently, you can even try the game for free until December 3, 2025!
