Upcoming PS5 Exclusive Lets You Use Kratos's Axe, and It's Not God of War

Key Takeaways

  • Astro will be able to wield Kratos’s Leviathan Axe in the upcoming PS5 exclusive Astro Bot.
  • The axe will only be available during a single God of War-themed level.
  • Astro Bot will be the second non-God of War game to let players use Kratos’s Leviathan Axe, after Fortnite did the same in late 2020.

As a hardcore gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Astro Bot for PlayStation 5 is shaping up to be a game I won’t want to miss. The addition of Kratos’ Leviathan Axe from the God of War series is a brilliant move that has me even more excited than ever before.

As a thrilled fan, I can’t wait to get my hands on the Astro Bot game! Sony has confirmed that this exciting new title for PlayStation 5 will let us utilize Kratos’s powerful Leviathan Axe from the recent God of War games. This makes Astro Bot the second non-God of War game where we can wield Kratos’s legendary weapon. I simply can’t wait to experience this unique blend of worlds!

Fans who closely followed the news might not find it unexpected that the Leviathan Axe is being incorporated into the new platformer. This inclusion was hinted at in the trailer for Astro Bot, which was released in late May 2024. In a three-minute clip from the trailer, a robot depiction of Kratos can be seen throwing the Leviathan Axe to the game’s main character. However, upon catching it, the character promptly falls down due to the axe’s tremendous weight.

Astro Will Be Able To Wield Kratos’s Leviathan Axe

Three months on, Sony has further developed the initial teaser, integrating it into the launch trailer for Astro Bot, which was released on August 30, a week prior to the game’s official release. At approximately the 1 minute and 29 second mark, the video continues the previously mentioned scene where Astro retrieves the Leviathan Axe from the ground with an impressive flair. The robot then performs a graceful spin, concluding with what appears to be a transformation into Kratos, complete with his signature beard. The trailer then features two short scenes demonstrating the protagonist utilizing the axe to defeat enemies and even confronting a boss that resembles a giant warthog.

Leviathan Axe Will Only Be Available in a Single Astro Bot Level

As you might expect, the Leviathan Axe wielded by Kratos won’t be accessible throughout the entire game, according to Nicolas Doucet, head of Team Asobi. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, he mentioned that Kratos will temporarily hand over his weapon to Astro as part of a special God of War-themed stage. At this point, Doucet hasn’t shared any additional details, but the game’s launch trailer does suggest that Astro can mimic Kratos’s axe-swinging and throwing moves. Intriguingly, Astro Bot will be only the second game outside of the God of War series to allow players to use Kratos’s Leviathan Axe, following Fortnite where it was introduced as a Pickaxe skin in late 2020.

In the upcoming game, Kratos won’t be the only Sony character you’ll encounter. Similar to the game Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot emphasizes showcasing the power of the PlayStation brand by featuring a multitude of crossovers. So far, Sony has hinted at or confirmed appearances from Ratchet and Clank, Ico, Uncharted, Ape Escape, and several other well-known franchises. Interestingly, even Crash Bandicoot, who is now under Microsoft’s ownership, is scheduled to appear in the upcoming platformer.

Team Asobi’s upcoming game is set to release both physically and digitally on September 6th. Initially, it will only be available on PlayStation 5, but given recent hints from team leader Doucet, there’s a possibility that Astro Bot may make its way to PC platforms in the near term.
