Upcoming Steam FPS Game Has Serious GoldenEye 007 Vibes

I’m really excited about Agent 64: Spies Never Die, a new game coming to Steam. It’s clearly taking a lot of cues from GoldenEye 007, which, let’s be real, is a classic and one of the best first-person shooters ever made. A lot of us were bummed when the official GoldenEye 007 remake got cancelled back in 2021, but this indie game might just scratch that itch!

It’s hard to overstate how much of an impact GoldenEye 007 had on first-person shooter games. Rare’s 1997 title really changed the game, especially with its split-screen multiplayer, which became the model for many shooters that followed. Over the years, lots of games have tried to copy what made GoldenEye 007 so special, but few have succeeded. However, based on what we’ve seen in the trailers for the new game, Agent 64: Spies Never Die appears to be one of the few that might actually capture the same feeling of classic GoldenEye 007 gameplay.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die Is an Ode to GoldenEye 007 and the Nintendo 64 Era of FPS Games

Coming to Steam, Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a new first-person shooter created by Replicant D6. It’s designed to feel like the classic shooters from the ’90s, especially those on the Nintendo 64. The game will have a story mode with about 14 missions, and a new Online Arena where up to eight players can compete in 4v4 matches. A test version of the Online Arena will be available soon, and you can request access on the game’s Steam page. Taking cues from the original GoldenEye 007, Agent 64 will also let you play competitively with friends locally using split-screen. The developer is aiming for a 2025 launch, but a specific release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.

If you enjoy playing shooter games with friends, you’ll probably have a lot of fun with Agent 64: Spies Never Die. It lets you play together either on the same screen (couch co-op) or online. You and your friends can experience the entire story together, no matter how you choose to play. There’s also a challenge mode where you can test your skills against pre-made teams of bots with special missions. And in the future, Agent 64 will let you customize the game with mods in any mode. Plus, a Paradox Mode will add fun cheats and settings to keep things interesting.

If you enjoy classic first-person shooters like GoldenEye 007, you might also want to try Turok on Steam. This updated version includes extra features to keep fans engaged while they anticipate Agent 64: Spies Never Die. Turok delivers a comparable retro FPS feel, but instead of espionage, it sends you on a Jurassic Park-inspired quest to track down and eliminate dangerous dinosaurs.
