A new survival action game called *Project Retrograde: The Becoming* has been revealed, and it’s heavily inspired by the *Resident Evil* series. Players can expect a story-focused experience when it launches on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Project Retrograde: The Becoming is the first game from Chinese developer Invercity Game Works. A trailer was recently released on IGN during the Tokyo Game Show 2025, and the game immediately appears to be heavily inspired by the Resident Evil series.
Project Retrograde: The Becoming Blends Resident Evil-Like Combat with Symbiote Powers
The story of *Project Retrograde: The Becoming* takes place in 1995, centering around the failure of humanity’s final plan, known as Project Retrograde. After this collapse, a dangerous ancient parasite called LUCA emerges, threatening to wipe out what’s left of humankind. Players will play as a bounty hunter who is infected with LUCA, forming a unique bond that gives them powerful abilities, but risks complete takeover. The game’s trailer clearly shows inspiration from *Resident Evil*, with a protagonist resembling Leon Kennedy, camera angles mirroring the 2023 *RE4* remake, and similar fighting moves.
Though some are calling *Project Retrograde: The Becoming* similar to *Resident Evil*, it offers some interesting features of its own. The most notable is a combat system where you can absorb the skills of defeated enemies, instantly learning new abilities and unlocking different fighting styles. The game is set in a dark, post-apocalyptic world filled with old-fashioned technology, which sounds quite compelling. There’s also a system called LUX that allows players to control the weather underground, though its impact on gameplay is currently unknown.
It’s clear that Invercity Game Works drew heavy inspiration from games like *Resident Evil*, *Death Stranding*, and *The Last of Us* when creating *Project Retrograde: The Becoming*. While some players have wished for more unique character designs and settings, the game ultimately offers a lot of fresh and interesting experiences.
