There’s a lot of discussion about whether video games should offer different difficulty levels. While games like Dark Souls are often at the center of this debate, many players enjoy incredibly challenging games. The upcoming TOONSOULS is one such title, designed to truly test a player’s skills. It draws inspiration from the charming but difficult animation style of Cuphead and includes nods to the famously hard Dark Souls, creating a unique gameplay experience that builds on those influences.
Gamers who remember the arcades and consoles of the 80s and 90s likely recall games being very difficult – there were no save points, and enemies often took a lot of effort to defeat. While older games were designed to be challenging to extend playtime, many modern games also feature incredibly tough boss battles and obstacles. TOONSOULS continues this tradition, demanding perfection from players, but makes achieving it especially hard with one unique feature.
TOONSOULS Trailer Showcases Dark Souls Brutality in a Cuphead World
Okay, so I just played TOONSOULS, and it’s seriously cool. Visually, it’s got that awesome, old-timey cartoon look of Cuphead, but the gameplay definitely throws a little Dark Souls vibe at you – it’s tough! You run and jump through 2D levels, chucking little javelins at everything that moves. I can take three hits before I’m out, and I collect coins to buy power-ups. But here’s the kicker: the levels are different every time you play. It’s procedurally generated, so you can’t memorize the layout or enemy patterns. That means you basically get one shot at each level because it all changes up. You really have to think on your feet and adapt – no pre-planning allowed! It’s a fun challenge, but definitely keeps you on your toes.
Players who love extremely challenging games – and don’t mind replaying levels multiple times hoping for a bit of luck – might enjoy the added randomness in TOONSOULS. If you’re a fan of tough games, you can add it to your Steam wishlist and get ready for its early access release.

Okay, so games like Souls-likes and super hard platformers aren’t for the faint of heart, I get that. But honestly, for those of us who love that kind of challenge, there’s nothing quite like finally beating a boss or level that felt totally impossible. That feeling of relief and accomplishment is the best reward in gaming, hands down. I’m not sure just how brutal TOONSOULS will be, but the way it builds levels randomly and its art style reminds me a lot of Cuphead. If you’re up for a real challenge, it definitely looks promising!
